Can you strech out the top portion of the stomach

Recommended Posts

I was banded on 7/24 and have been so hungry, no fill until 9/10. Yesterday I was able to eat the filling of two carne asada tacos and rice and Beans. I felt very sick afterward all night. i finally fell asleep and felt better this morning and wnd to walk 5 miles. This is the first time I have eaten anything "bad" since before my surgery. I was super scared last night that i streched out the band or the top portion on the stomach. Is it possible to do that eating alot one time? I am scared that i messed something up, i will never do that again. so sick. Anyone help anyone could give would be great. Thanks

I was able to eat pretty much whatever before my first fill on Fri. Remember, once the swelling goes down from the surgery, you really aren't very restricted until your fill. I noticed a HUGE difference yesterday after my fill. I now feel "Thanksgiving dinner" full everytime I take a few bites of anything when just earlier this week, I wasn't getting full. I even gain a pound or two back before my fill. My dr. said not to worry if that happened because once the fill came was my "losing stage." You are still in the "healing stage."

Yes you can stretch out your pouch but it takes a pattern of overeating, not one wild meal of two taco fillings!

Odds are that made you ill because it's been a while since you've eaten anything with that much spice/fat/fiber. You don't need to feel guilty; there's nothing bad about carne asada! Just watch it, listen to your body, try to quit when you're satisfied instead of full.

WOOOO HOOOO!!! I love that analogy of hitting your sweet spot.

That has to be the best feeling in the world to know you are full on just a few bites of food. I can't wait for that to happen.

I don't think you will stretch out your upper stomach as others said on one time over eating.

My surgeons office told me that if I started to feel really hungry and it was before my first fill to call them and try to get in sooner for a fill.

Since you have a few weeks to go you might want to call them and see about getting your fill a little sooner.

This whole "stretching out the pouch" thing for some reason really bothers me that people freak out about it--no offense meant to you0. Think about it--thru your life you eat sometimes too much and if you keep eating a lot you end up being able to eat more (stretching your stomach), but then you go on a diet--you eat less and over time you are satisfied with less (your stomach SHRANK) until you decided to eat more and it stretched again, then you ate less and it shrank, and on and on. I'm not exactly sure about the over the years thought of well...being like a balloon--after it gets bigger it will shrink but not as small as before, or like skin stretches and shrinks but over the years it loses it's elasticity.

My point--DON'T STRESS!

Unfortunately, you CAN stretch the pouch out to the point it will slip over the band, at which time nothing (or very little) will go through because it's hanging over it. Been there....done that....and had to have revision surgery.

The chance of stretching it out with no restriction is slim, but when there's Fluid in the band, my doctor advised me to MEASURE NO MORE THAN 1/2 CUP food at mealtime. The pouch is designed to hold 1/2 cup. So it IS something that you have to be careful and watch out for.:sneaky:

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
