Why do we need several fills...

Recommended Posts

This might seem like a dumb question, but here I go...

Im not sure why we have to have several fills....does the Fluid in our band leak somehow and cause us to have less restriction? Does it stretch?

I had my first fill a few months ago and have a lot of restriction still, however, when I was talking to my fill doctor she said she would probably expect me back for a second fill around September/October...Yet, I don't feel any change since I saw her last, so Im curious as to what would cause me to need another fill.

Thanks in advance for your answers!

Several reasons. One, as most of us lose weight, fat around our stomach "goes" and so the band loosens. Also some fill is just "lost" over time...I've forgotten what it's called but it happens.

Some people get no restriction from one or two fills.

or three or four

Because everyones body is different and when you lose weight your stomach gets smaller which then requires more liquid in your band to then be as tight as it was before you lost the weight for instance I find that every 20 to 25 pounds I need a fill hope this helped. Cat:rolleyes2:

That helps me... I was beginning to wonder. I've only lost about 30 pounds since my last fill, and I'm feeling like I could use another. But I was thinking a fill should last a good 75 pounds - I'm glad you posted this so I know I was wrong, and maybe I do need a fill. I'll make an appt.

I am one of those too. Am on my 4th fill since being banded but was told I had alot of fat around my stomach. Had someone try to make me feel bad about having "so many" fills compared to her 2. Oh well, to each their own. :smile2:

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
