Diet soda?

Recommended Posts

Is it true that we are not supposed to have any type of diet soda? I love the twister orange soda diet.

Diet Coke addict here - I thought I would die without my soda fix but the funny thing is I haven't even thought about it in the past 3 weeks. To many other things to think about now I guess.

Good luck,

i was told you might be able to get away with a soda that is "flat"... but then, what would be the point, right? i'm preparing for no soda. thank goodness iced tea is still ok! :(

You've got to think of the carbonation in the soda. Have you ever opened a bottle of soda and stuck a balloon on top and watched the balloon fill up from the gas? The same thing would happen with your pouch and it would stretch out. Having said that, I know several people banded in my group that still drink Diet Coke. Personally, I've gone cold turkey.

The Dr. I am looking to have do my band has said that after 2 months if you feem ok after drinking soda that you can as long as its diet but not for the first 2 months.

The doctor I'm using for surgery also told me that diet soda would be okay 8-12 months after the surgery, if I was able to tolerate it. He said that the first 18-24 months are the most important because you will most likely lose the most weight with in that time and soda isn't the ideal drink when you're trying to lose weight.

I stopped as soon as i decided to have the surgery. I lost 10 pounds right off the bat with only stopping Diet Coke.

No soda for me, the carbination can cause swelling and a tear in your stomach.

Ummmmm, I think its a myth. In Australia, where I live and where they do many more band surgeries (it is much more accepted here and more readily available) they dont tell people not to have carbonated drinks. I have several a day, and I live on soda Water. They even served us (freshly opened - so NOT flat) soda in hospital.

Thanks folks, I appreciate the info. I drank 1/2 of a diet black cherry coke yesterday. I felt fine but I think I'll play it safe and stay off of it for now.

My doc says diet sode is ok after 4 weeks of banding. I plan to drink what I did before - 1/2 one can of diet per day and that's it. Don't have to quit - won't drink too much!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
