new banster, need help, may have food stuck?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone.

I was banded Aug 06 in TJ Mex by Dr. Ortiz. I've lost 33 lbs so far.

I was on liquids until yesterday, which was my first day of solids. I've been following the post-op diet to the letter and yesterday I followed the solid diet to the letter, too (or so I thought?!?)

But I woke up about 20 minutes ago with a weird pain in my chest. I can feel that it's the food I had for dinner, just sitting there!

I know I shouldn't drink anything, that will make it worse. And I've heard sometimes walking helps. So I'll take a 3 am stroll through my neighborhood after I post.

But I am freaked out!

Is this normal for some people as they progress to solids to have an incident like this? Am I irreversibly damaging my pouch? How long will it take for the food to work it's way through? Have I completely f*cked my band already? Arghhhh!

For reference sake here's what I ate:

Bkfst: 80% of 2 egg whites, 3 bites of very well toasted bread (seemed to go down fine).

Lunch: 10 small bits of smoked oyster (gross, I know, but I love them!)

Dinner: About a little more than a half cups worth of the following: baked squash, peas and soft meatloaf with some catsup.

Any help, reassurance or advice will be much appreciated!

First of all, it may not be food from last night. I don't know what time you ate but I would think that the food would have passed. It may be that you are having some reflux since you began eating yesterday.

I would call your Dr. and get it checked right out. While it is not something to panic about it is vital that you check in about things that are outside what they decribed might be the experience. Reflux can be very hard on the band (although I doubt one night of it) but it is a sign that you should follow up on today. Best of luck and let us know what happens.

I would definitely check with my doctor. Did they pre-fill you with your surgery? I have read a lot of posts on here from people who have been pre-filled and are having problems. It could have been the toast and then adding food the rest of the day causing you to bog down and get stuck. Unfortunately if that is what it is, waiting it out is the only solution. But I would call the doc.

Call Dr. Ortiz or the OCC front desk, they are all very willing to help and can probably help you figure out what it is. I'm willing to bet it isn't food stuck in there.

Hi guys, I called the OCC on Friday morning and got the very nice Dr. So. Since he can't see me I described my symptoms and he thought I had a lot of swelling which was causing the food to get stuck there.

He said that some people just have more swelling than others. I think that applies to me. When my surgery mates and I compared our bellies after surgery mines was bruised and gruesome looking and their tummies didn't have any bruising. Plus, I took a while to feel like myself again, so being prone to swelling sounds realistic.

The food has finally passed but now the swelling is TERRIBLE. I can feel the swelling in the pouch and up through my throat, it feels raw and tight and I have a squeezing sensation.

I'm going to call Dr. Ortiz's cell phone (I hate bugging someone on a Sunday) but this is getting worrisome.

Will post his response.

Thanks everyone for checking in!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
