PB2 and Bread Crumb Substitute

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I just wanted to share two great things I found out about today.

The first: I bought a jar of PB2, powdered Peanut Butter. You can read about it, order it etc. from their website: Bell Plantation, Inc. - PB2 Powdered Peanut Butter - Home. There is only 50 cals per serving (2 tablespoons), 2g of fat, 3 carbs. Compared to regular peanut butter (188 cals, 16g of fat, 6 carbs), its like too good to be true. I put it in my Protein shake and it was AWESOME. The shake was less creamy than usual, but it tasted like my regular chocolate peanutbutter shake, but with hardly any fat and calories. I'm so happy I found this product and wanted to share.

The second: I learned today that it is possible to substitute bread crumbs (in a recipe such as salmon burgers, meat loaf, crab cakes, etc.) with ground sesame seeds. I have been looking for something like this FOREVER! I've been wanting to make crab cakes and salmon burgers, and also veggie and black bean burgers, but I have not done it because I don't want to use the bread crumbs. I haven't tried it but I think it will be an effective and tasty substitute.

Just wanted to share those good finds and good news!

Parmesan cheese is such a good idea!! What kind of things do you put it in? Will it work for things like crab cakes or salmon burgers? And do you just use the powdered kind that you can get at the market?

I hear everywhere that Pork rinds are good for a bread crumb substitute, but unfortunately I don't eat meat (just seafood) so I can't use them. I'm hoping the sesame seeds work and I will DEFINITELY try to the Parm cheese. That sounds amazing! Especially for the crab cakes!

I use:

Half and half ole' green-can store-bought parmesan and ground-up Pork rinds,

or

half and half parmesan and almond meal,

or

1/3 parm, almond meal, and soy flour.

In fact, just parmesan works well, too. I use these for anything from chicken to eggplant (I fry a lot). Spice it up with poultry seasoning, Italian seasoning, thyme, sage, etc., and you're good to go.

I love PB2, and I use ground almonds, or flaxseed meal (small amounts - it's kinda slimy!) or parmesan for crumbs. I love the sesame seed idea! I am meat-free AND wheat-free so any ideas for "bread" substitutes are very welcomed!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
