Lost Too Much Weight

Yes, BCBS will then send your surgeon a pre approval letter which means you really "approved". With that letter the surgeon can get his money if the insurance company decides try and not pay him.... but thats another story.

BCBS easy approval... Yay

I'm keeping everything crossed!! Trying to stay positive even though I am quite impatient. The program director was unable to fax my documents to BCBS and I don't know why. And it took her 3 days to get them in the mail! I am sitting here biting my nails -- literally. But deep breaths..... I've come this far, so I HAVE to be patient!! I hope it is as easy as everyone says it is. She said I may have to wait between 14-28 days to hear anything from them! Okay... deep breaths AGAIN! lol

I was diagnosed with GERD so I hope that will help my case. I really appreciate all the positive feedback and support! Thank you!

Amy :tt1:

I was told that by my surgeon too. Don't lose too much or you will get disqualified. But, if you are doing so good, and you feel great! Keep doing what you are doing. In a year if it doesn't work, then you can go back to your doctor and try again. It is all about getting the weight off- not how it comes off. Great job! You can do it!

Sorry I don't have time today to read all the posts here. I wanted to let you know that I have BCBS PPO, they're different from state to state and even city to city. Here, you need to meet whatever criteria they have at the time of approval submission. I could not go below the 35BMI at any time during the 6 months. Luckily I knew from reading here that this was important and I confirmed it with my surgeon's ins. expert (or I would have gone below the 35 BMI easily- I'm a professional dieter too). So even if you lost a lot of weight and you're still above your minimum BMI (35 with comorbidities or 40) then you should be fine. I was approved within 48 hrs. and my surgeon's office saif BCBS PPO is the easiest to gain approval from here. Good luck to you!

I have finally decided to look into bariatric surgery....I weighed 296 in 1998; went to a weight loss clinic and lost 120 lbs, but within two years it all came back on....I have tried and tried since then, but currently weight my all-time high of 325. I am scareed about the powerlessness I feel the last six months..have never ever felt this out of control..and completely unable to curb my appetite. I am so heavy (5"8") and BMI of 49. the doctor won't give me diet pills anymore because it could hurt my heart. I am 63 and am pretty resigned to Water aerobics and that's about all I can do...the rest of the day on the computer... ago...cannot walk very well, etc. tired easily.

Seriah, You need to ask your doctor about weight loss surgery. You sound like a candidate. You may qualify with a lower BMI due to co-morbidities (i.e. heart problems).sleep apnea, diabetes, etc. Do it for yourself.

Well, BCBS confirmed that they received my documents on Sept 16th and forwarded to another department. It can take up to 6-8 weeks for them to make a decision. I did see my surgeon yesterday and I am maintaining my weight. I have other medical issues going on right now though and am very stressed. And very depressed.... I thought this was going to be a lot easier than this. I am ready to give up. All I want to do is cry. I know the insurance company has not made their decision, but I feel as if they will not approve me. I don't know why, but I don't feel very positive right now. I just wish it didn't take so long to get ins approval.

BTW~ My current weight is 201.2. Last month it was 203. I have PCOS, am hypothyroid, have GERD, reflex sympathetic dystrophy and degenerative joint disease in my right knee, high cholesterol and triglycerides and pericardial effusion. I also suffer from depression and anxiety. If they don't approve me, I don't know if I have the energy to appeal my case. :tongue2:

Umystifyme, It is hard, the time frame is not set in stone. It can be the longest a case takes to an average. Just wait. You have several co-morbidities, which will help your argument. You will know by Halloween. Even staying at a stable weight now does not mean you will lose the request. Hold on, pray, think positive thoughts. If there is a WLS group in your area, I'd urge you to talk with them. We can tell our our experiences across the country, but someone you see face to face may help. Good Luck. BTW, Your surgeon, or others in this site may be able to direct you to attorneys who do this. ( if you need an attorney, some initial appeals only need more information - been there done that)

:thumbup:Insurance companies are crazy. I thought it was going to be a big problem, but I decided to have the surgery done at the hospital I work at. They just push it right thru. Dont even need pre approval. I just have to past the tests and screenings and stuff. I had an appointment with the surgeon on Monday.

Thank you. I will check into support groups. I never thought about an attorney. Thanks for sharing that. I really appreciate it!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
