Lost Too Much Weight

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone!!

I just recently completed my 6 month program. I saw my surgeon on Tuesday and apparently, I lost too much weight. In his professional opinion, I can do it on my own. I'm a bit frustrated and confused. Has anyone else had this problem? I am afraid the insurance company will not approve me, even though they are supposed to go by your starting weight and BMI. I have BCBS PPO.

I had thought about that as well but I was told that even though I am doing a 6 month program that if I don't lose any weight its ok because like the instructor said if it were just that easy I would not be there. Losing is not the hard part it is keeping it off and that is why I am looking for help. Good luck with your ins.

I am 5'4" and my starting weight was 285. I am now 203. I lost 82 pounds in 6 months with diet and exercise. I'm afraid my insurance company will not approve the surgery because of my massive weight loss.

Any advice would be helpful. I didn't plan to lose this much weight. I just followed the nutritionist's diet and exercise plan and it came off....

Ok...have you tried to diet before? Have you done as well on those diets as you did on this? You do realize that 82 pounds in 6 months is a GREAT loss and you may be one of those few rare people who really can lose with just diet and exercise! Do you have a history of dieting/losing/regaining more? Or is this the first time you really gave it your all?

I have tried tons of diets in the past and have always given it my all. I am always successful in losing weight but always gain it back plus some. I definitely can lose weight with diet and exercise alone but I always regain it. And now I have more health problems.

I agree with Restless. 82 pounds is amazing and you should probably evaluate your history with dieting, weightloss and regaining weight. If you are one of those people who diets and loses a lot, just to regain all of it back plus more, then the band is probably a good option. But if you can do it without surgery, then go for it!

My current BMI is approximately 34. Co-mobity's??? I'm not sure of. I'm sorry... what would those be??? I had a lot of health problems when I was heavier, such as a fatty liver, but that has resolved itself with weight loss.

You know yourself best. Hopefully ins. will do as they say...go by your starting weight rather than current. If so, you'll have a GREAT start!

I have also heard that it is your starting weight so I don't think you should have any problems. You might want to gather any information you can that proves you have lost before but re-gained just in case they ask.

If the insurance denies it do you have any doctor records you can show where you have lost weight but it always comes back?

Also if they deny it you have a strong argument that you were just doing what needed to be done for the program and that you were following the rules and really wanted to show that you were going to use the tool (being the lap band) to the best.

I hope if all works out for you but I understand it would really suck to do all that hard work and lose and amazing amount of weight and not be able to get the tool to continue to help you on your journey.

Congrats on the amazing weightloss, focus on the good and I agree with Restless, if you were able to be discipline to do it without the band then continue on.....imagine what you can do in another 6 months....best of luck

Have you considered some psychotherapy along with your weight loss efforts? It could be that it is all you need to be successful with maintenance weight once you get there.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
