One week after surgery

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I'm new here and just had my band surgery one week ago on 8/19/09. I feel like I am doing alright although it seems that I can eat quite a bit. I don't feel like at this time there would be any issue eating many things, but I have stuck to Soup, Jello, mashed potatoes and poached eggs. I also have had some fruit. I have lost 11 pounds in this first week, loosing about 2lbs a day for the last 3 days. I have already experienced eating too much or too fast, having to burb stuff up until I was comfortable. Not that I wanted to do that but your mind doesn't know the new stomachs' limits and it's hard to recognize when to stop at first. My question is when do you get your first fill and does anyone ever go without ever getting a fill, just the band itself restricting intake enough to do the job? I started at 275 with a goal of 200. Is this a reasonable goal> Thanks for the imput and it's nice to be able to ask someone "in the know" real life questions.

Thanks,

Bucky

Hey Bucky! Congrats on your surgery and your weight loss!! Make sure, even if you feel like you could eat foods that you're not eating right now, to stick to your doctor's post op diet. This is so you can heal properly and it will reduce any risk of slippage, erosion, etc.

I had my first fill about 6 weeks after surgery (but this is different for every doctor...your doctor should let you know when he wants to do the first fill). I have heard that some people feel restriction without a fill, but I think its unusual. I definitely didn't, and actually I didn't have any restriction after my first fill. I just got my second one yesterday, but I'm on liquids so I don't know if I have any restriction yet.

As far as 200 being a reasonable goal, it depends on your height (and also if you are male or female I think). 200 pounds is a normal BMI for a person that is about 6'4. You can input your weight and height into a BMI calculator (just google it and you'll find one) so you can find out what weight is good for your height. But also check-in with your doctor and ask what he/she thinks is the best weight for you specifically. Good luck and welcome!

Thanks for the reply! I for sure have restriction with just the band in place. My follow up appointment with the doctor is 9/13/09. I am not sure what my BMI would be at 200. I am 5'9" but am very broadly build and the ol' average scale just doesn't appy. I would be at my highschool senior weight at 195 and that was at about 12% fat or so. My doctor said he thought I'd on average loose about 69 pounds from the experience of his previous patients so that's close enough for me to work hard to do the rest. Thanks for the reply!

i'm also 5' 9" and started at 276. My doctor thinks it's reasonable for me to get to 176, 100 loss!! That would be about 20lbs below what i was starting my senior year of high school (i'm 36). I'm very excited to start working towards that number. So far i'm down 28 lbs and only 6 days post op!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
