Going to fly for first time since banded

Recommended Posts

I've flown 2-3 times since being banded. A few pointers i can give. Do not eat within 2 hours of boarding. I at least seem to get tight and miserable when i fly. Also i've found having some gas-x strips with me can ease the gassy tightness i get. i've never got an unfill prior to flying. All have been short trips within the USA. But i'm planning on jamaica in a few months and i do plan on getting a partial unfill prior to going. It has nothing to do with wanting to eat a ton while on vacation. Its a longer flight than i've previously taken. and i dont' wanna risk being sick somewhere i don't have access to my doctor. And i'd rather take the risk of gaining back a few pounds than of spending my vacation sick. A few pounds i can take back off. but i cant get back the money spent on a vacation ruined By PBing and sliming the whole time.Hope this helps

Hi. I've flown several times, but none of my trips have been real far. I live in Albuquerque NM and had my surgery done in Houston TX. I flew home 3 days after my surgery and have flown back for 4 fills (there and back in the same day). It is a 2 1/2 hour flight each way. I've been to Vegas a couple of times too. I've never had any problems before, during, or after flying. And now I fit in the seat very comfortably and the seat belt is easy to buckle :) Good luck to you. Becky

My surgeon is six hours from here driving..or a 40 min flight...so i fly down for my fills...i don't find that i'm tighter or anything when flying..absolulty no difference than any other day...i just can't wait until i can fit in my own seat and not need an extender! lol

I will be flying for the first time also on Sept 4th. Thanks everyone for your posts. Even though it is not my thread, it helps me also. I am 7 lbs away from onederland. I really wanted to be in onederland by then but I don't know if I will make it or not. Maybe I can be there by the time I come home. Anyway, the last time I flew which was in May, I was at the point where I almost had to ask for an extender. I had to suck in my gut and pray the seat belt clicked. It did but barely. I went yesterday to get a fill check and add a little and found out that I went from a 36 BMI to a 32 BMI! Now I am excited to get on that plane!

I was told after you have a fill to not fly for one week, but I didn't realize that simply flying could be a problem because I have the band. What are some of the problems that can occur due to having the band when you fly? My husband and I are planning on flying to Washington State later this year, as well as Europe next summer.

I fly every week and have not had any problems. I don't feel any tightness or discomfort at all. I started flying 3 weeks after my surgery and fly each week. My Dr. is conservative on my fills so that I don't have issues because he knows I am out of town for work every week.

I ended up having to fly earlier than expected (yesterday) and guess what? I counted six inches I got to pull up on my seatbelt! I was so thrilled. I guess people thought I was crazy because I was sitting there using my fingers to count the inches and then I let out a little woo hoo! What a great feeling!

I too have been told by doctor there is no issues with flying and the band. I have flown 2 weeks after surgery and fly about once a month with absolutely no issues. I am flying to france next month for my honeymoon and was told not to expect any problems !!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
