:sad:I have my 2nd nutrition appointment on Friday and haven't lost any weight! I'm worried they will think I can't do this. Changing my diet is the hardest thing for me. I have stopped drinking anything with caffeine and carbonation. I quit chewing gum, using straws, and drinking with my meals. I have been eating every 2-3 hour like they want me too but I don't always make the best choices. I feel like I have made a lot of changes but I worry it's not enough. Anyone else have with the same kind of issues? or can anyone give any positive outlooks?

I don't know what the timeline is like for you, but it sounds like you've made some major changes already. Give your body time to adjust to them and the weight will come off. You mentioned you don't always make the best food choices, so you know that is an area you have to work on. Don't be too hard on yourself. You've made some incredible changes already. Now that you have conquered them, focus on picking the right foods in the right portion size.

What's wrong with gum chewing? I would think they'd encourage that as it gives you something to chew on. Acid production in the stomach from gum chewing maybe?

I wondered about the gum myself...I just wanted to add DRINK WATER! I add Crystal Light to mine, but I dillute it down by using double the Water. My doc says drinking the sweet in low, or splenda, etc. can stimulate hunger, but I have found that dilluting really works for me.

You can do it! Keep us posted!

dbaby6, sounds like your pre-band? Don't kick yourself, you've already made some major adjustments in your previous diet, that's AWESOME! :) Don't sweat seeing the nutritionist, you can relate all the changes you've succeeded in, and also show you realize your still a work in progress!

As far as not always making perfect choices, I'm guessing non of us do 100 percent of the time. It is VERY important to follow your pre and post op directions from your surgeon. Post-op most import so your body can heal properly.

As far as the gum-chewing is concerned I believe it's because it could cause a block to your stoma once you have restriction if you were to swallow it by accident. I still chew sf gum but only while sitting at my computer [since I KNOW I can't walk and chew gum at the same time :)].

dbaby, don't be so hard on yourself. For most of us, establishing a healthy eating pattern is something that we're not used to, so it will take some time to adapt to the change in lifestyle.

I hate to admit it, but journaling is really what helped me to track what I was eating, when, how to use my calories, etc. You will also find that you can treat yourself every now and then and still see good results. As a pp mentioned, Water is key!! I can't stand just water, so I use those Crystal Light to go packs and just add it to my water bottle and YUM! It doesn't even taste like a diet-type drink and it's only 5 calories!!!

These initial steps are hard and yes, we're going to fall down, cheat, and feel like we can't do it, but we just have to pick ourselves right back up and start over. You have a great support system in this board right here and people that will provide great advice and moral support. Believe in yourself and just keep going!!! We'll get there :-)!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
