Went to my Primary Doctor today

Recommended Posts

It was a weird visit. He suggested that I do need a procedure but he thinks it should be the bypass. Which I disagreed with b/c of the pros of getting the lap band.

I just feel that the bypass is such a high risk procedure just to achieve the same results as a lap band procedure in 5 years time.

Hi! I'd go with your gut (no pun intended), seriously..my original primary care doctor didn't even want to discuss it with me, she just said no, like I was asking for her permission. I think to get the best medical opinion on what is right for YOU, you need to start researching surgeons/hospitals that are in network for you (if you're going the insurance route). Most of them have free seminars or consultations that only cost you a copay like a regular doctor's visit. THEY would know best, they'd be doing the surgery after all! Besides, if you're not comfortable with what he "thinks" then a second opinion wouldn't hurt either!

Hope that helps! :)

I agree completely, I made my appointment for the initial consulatation with the surgeon for next month. I just wanted to another visit in with primary to get my yearly blood work done.

Honestly, he didn't know much about the procedure. He did give me a list of questions to ask about. Such as, how many procedures has the surgeon performed, how many with complications, how much weight he anticipates i lose, ask about spillage.

I agree with those questions, most questions I had thought of on my own, I guess I just wanted to get support from some knowledgeable but he wasn't.

But he did mention that I do need some type of procedure.

Thats great you're on top of things!! :) The best motivator is to know you've got things already working in motion towards a healthier you!

At least he agreed you needed SOMETHING! I would have been greatful for that response..needless to say I kicked my doctor to the curb! LOL!

:)

yeah, go with the one you want. I think some docs dont understand the lapband as well, or dont think that it will work. Some are from the school of thought that if you are really big (like I was), it wont work as well. WHATEVER! My lapband doc's main worry about the lapband was that it doesnt work for everyone bc you can cheat it, work around it, etc.

But once you commit....you can do it!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
