Didn't sleep for EGD!

Recommended Posts

:confused:I had my EGD on Friday, and what scares me is that I didn't go to sleep for the procedure. I don't know if that is bad, but they seemed like it doesn't happen very often. I don't know if they will even consider putting me fully under if I had issues with the EGD, so what is next? I meet the Dr. this Friday and get the results to my EGD, but a thousand things are going through my head, what if come surgery time I don't fall asleep and I can watch the whole thing???? Creepy! Has anyone else had this happen?:)

I had the same thing happen w/a colonoscopy. Of course it was in a military hospital. Hubs heard me screaming in the waiting room. A few years later, my civilian doc wanted me to have another one. I was terrified and expleain what happened at the military hospital. She told me not to worry, that if she saw me waking up, she'd give me some more of the 'good stuff.' Sure enough, I remember coming to, then I was back out just as fast. Talk to any doc who wants to put you under. Relay your experience and they'll take care of you! I had an EGD, also at a military hospital. All I was given was some chlorseptic at the back of my throat. I know what a horrible experience it is being awake for those things. I hope what meds they gave you had some effect!

sending :)

Although it is possible (as in, anything is possible) that a person could be awake through a lap procedure, the odds are SLIM SLIM SLIM to none. Because...you are monitored six ways to Sunday (whatever that means...I know it's like a LOT!) they ck your blood pressure, your pulse, and so on. The anesthesiologist is a pro and the drugs used are getting better all the time.

Tell your surgeon you're concerned, and the anesthesiologist. Find out WHAT they gave you and how much, in case your docs ask. Otherwise, try not to fret.

Unless you were in total PAIN for the EGD odds are they just gave you something to calm, not totally sedate.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
