I've read several posts where you all mention greek yogurt. Can someone give us the skinny on greek yogurt and why it is better than regular yogurt?

I'm glad you asked. I've wondered the same thing. ;-)

For me, the big win is that it has a thicker, creamier texture that I enjoy more. Greek yogurt has a little more Protein in it as well. Overall though plain nonfat greek yogurt and plain nonfat yogurt kinda are pretty similar.

Who makes it, and can you get it in regular stores?

I can find the Fage Total 0% plain greek yogurt at the big grocery store by my house.

Make sure you get the nonfat or lowfat version. Also I'd suggest getting the plain (nonflavored) version because the vanilla flavored or the ones that have add-ins like honey or fruits have lots and lots of sugars/carbs. It's better to buy it plain and then mix in your own stuff.

Greek yogurt is more satisfying because of the fat content. it is very rich and creamy. obviously the fat content could be a problem. A l/f or n/f variety sounds great but I can't see how it would then ne any more satisfying than regular l/f yogurt.

You can usually get it in the natural foods section of larger grocery stores. I like the unflavored Fage yogurt the best. I add a little vanilla extract, a packet of Stevia, and add a little homemade trail mix. Usually a 1/2 container with trail mix is enough for me.

I agree with the poster who said get the unflavored. You can do so many more variations with it. Also the texture of greek yogurt is like sour cream. Some use it in place of sour cream in recipes.

ps. A year ago I wouldn't have even come close to buying greek yogurt. Now - I LOVE it!

Also, there is approx. 17 grams of Protein in the unflavored Fage 2% yogurt. Great source!

i love fage and chobani greek yogurt. chobani makes more of an assortmant of non/low-fat flavors. trader joe's also sells it and has 20g of Protein per serving.

personally, i was never a fan of yogurt but i've come to really love greek yogurt for it's creaminess

I live in NC and buy the Oikos and Chobani varieties at Harris Teeter and Lowes Foods. The texture is like sour cream and more satisfying. The vanilla or plain is the best because the fruit flavors have fruit on the bottom that are just too sugary for my tastes. I do not care for regular yogurt after the Greek style. The added Protein is definitley a plus, too!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
