I am going to be on a 3 week carnation Breakfast no sugar added diet. I have to drink 6 a day and I can have all the sugar free drinks I want ( crystal light , water) The thought of all this SWEET stuff makes me sick. I forgot to ask about broth. Can i drink it. Is there calories in it? To much salt ? or will it be ok to drink once a day?

Wow 3 weeks...makes me really glad I am only having to do 2 (hopefully)

My suregon does the Optifast program, pure liquids for the 2 weeks. 5 - 8 oz drinks. Like you I can have sugar free stuff in-between meals (hard candy, Jello, popsicles)

Also allowed are herbal teas, diet soda, coffee.

And brooth...well they want me to make it with a bouillon cubes and really Water it down. I can do either beef or chicken and they want a 1/4 of the cube to 8 oz of Water. So basically 4 cups of water to 1 cube which is 32 oz.

I would say if you maybe did it that way by really watering it down that it would be okay. Because you do need some sodium intake with what you are doing or you will get really dizzy and lightheaded.

I would check with the surgeon though to be sure. But I have found that what ever Clear Liquids are approved post op for the 2 weeks are what you should be doing pre op with something of major Protein (Optifast, etc...)

Ask your surgeon! That's your safest bet.

Like Restless Monkey said, check with your Dr. But if it is ok to have broth, you also might be able to have the chicken Soup flavored Unjury Protein mix. That has the same amount of protein as a shake (which broth does not have) and it tastes like chicken soup. It was a life saver for me during my pre-opt since I also could not just have something sweet.

Every surgeon must be different. My surgery is 8/26/09. I have to be on a liquid diet 7 days prior, which started this past week. I can have unlimited broth, SF Jell-o, SF popsicles and fudgesicles. I have 2 Protein Drinks per day, 2 fruits, 3 raw veggies. Unlimited SF drinks. It hasn't been terrible - today is my 4th day of it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
