Raise your hand if you have/had a low-carb (not liquid) pre-op diet

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have been doing my self-imposed pre-op diet of slimfast and one small meal per day and have lost 5 lbs so far. I am thinking about switching to more of a low carb plan, in part because I know from past experience I will lose doing that and partly because it seems easier to stick to. (I am only required to do 3 days clear liquid before surgery; so this pre-pre-op plan is my own doing - I want to get a running start on weight loss).

Sorry if I have been posting too much about this topic. I wish my doc just had a plan to follow for 2 weeks, then there would be no back and forth like this.

So, what was your low carb diet and how did you do on it?

Thanks!:o

My doc was rare that he didn't require a pre-op liquid diet. I had 4 weeks of a high Protein, low fat, low carb, low sugar diet. I lost weight and didn't really feel deprived in the process.

They did have me find a Protein supplement I liked. I used the Protein shake and bars to help me feel full through out the day.

If you are looking to increase your protein I have found the South Beach Living High Protein Cereal Bars (found in the Cereal isle of the grocery) are great. They cure my sweet craving too (Peanut Butter is my fav then the cinnamon roll tasting one). Each one has 10 grams of protein and about 140cals. Here (Ohio) they run about $3 for 5 bars, well worth it in my opinion.

The sample plan was (the best I can remember):

7am: nurtitional beverage(protein drink) + 1 small piece of fruit

10am: yogurt or Protein Bar

1pm: frozen meal under 250 cal with 12+ grams of protein also 2 cups of salad with 2 tsp of light Salad Dressing

4pm: nutritional beverage

7pm: sugar free pudding or 1 cup veggies (no corn or peas)

Congrats to you on such a great step forward- all ready working towards your goal!

Thanks Lisani. That sounds like a very reasonable plan.

I fell off the wagon this weekend - knowing that I don't have to do any diet until 3 days before surgery, I have that little voice saying, "why diet now! this is your last chance to eat!" But I plan to get back with the program today. I only have a week to go!

Thanks again.

My MDs diet for 2 weeks prior to surgery include:

10 oz lean protein/day

2 servings of fruit

2+ servings vegetables

at least 64 oz water/day

no grains at all and no Protein suplements before.

I was only told to go on a Low Carb Diet 2 weeks before my banding (which was this past Tuesday 8-25-09 & got out of the hospital today Wednesday). The MD didn't say how low, so I figured anything below 100 carbs a day was ok....

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
