My sister's best friend had the band done only a few days ago. She's always been a very big girl and has a serious sweet tooth. I"ve seen her polish off a half gallon of ice cream in 1 sitting multiple occasions. And that's not being snarky or judgemental cuz i've mindlessly polised off half a bag of chips more times than i can count. I actually tried to get her to consider bypass as opposed to band due to the sweet tooth.

Well she calls me today to say she feels really sick. Well the 1st thing i told her was to call her doc ASAP. then i ask, what have you been eating. Then she proceeds to tell me that for starters she drove her kids to McDonalds and ate fries and half a cheese burger. Then she proceeds to tell me she dosen't care for the liquid diet so she's been eating ice cream and has had a few Cookies. Now let me also state that she is in the same bariatric practice that i am. So i know for a fact she's been properly educated on the diet. They give a great book that's very specific to all patients. And have at least 2 visits with a nutritionist.

Well i kinda snapped. i started off by telling her what an idiot she was for driving with her 2 small children just a few days post op cuz she wants a milkshake and fries. If you wanna kill yourself then feel free.

i then proceeded to direct her to this site to look up some of the horror stories that can happen to people who slip or errode their band.

She then tries to tell me that im just being bitchy cuz im afraid she'll get skinnier than me. I prettty much told her to kiss my ass and make sure she called her doctor. I then hung up the phone. :(

Thanks guys. Just had to vent about this.

Sounds like one of those people who wants the weight to come off but not do any work for it. She's in for an eye opener....

You best be worried--eating ice cream and McDonald's, she'll be thin in no time.

She is in for a world of disappointment and possibly physical harm if she continues down this road. Too bad you could not get through to her. I am glad you told her your mind and then hung up. You are almost at goal! You go girl!

Shoot Jennifer just tell her to post on this board. There'll be plenty to just electronically "pat her on the head" and tell her it's no big deal, that we all slip up.

Ok that was catty but I couldn't resist. Hopefully she'll call the doc and they will scare some sense into her.

I'm just sleep deprived. (even "restless" monkeys need a little sleep!) LOL AND exasperated at people like your sister's friend who are so cavalier with their health, AND exasperated with the enablers who tell them it's ok. Sometimes things aren't ok.

BUT Thanks for the congrats! I was very pleased! Now, I have to get a real job! LOL

Jennifer, your friend is an idiot. There's just no other way to put it. I agree with telling her to check out the stories on here. And definitely her doc should know what she's done. I really think that there are some people who are NOT ready for bariatric surgery. Did she have a psych eval :cursing:? Does she think the band is magic? Further, she shouldn't be feeding her kids fast food. Or maybe she thinks the band comes in a junior size...perfect for that obese 4 yr. old. She also shouldn't be driving that soon after surgery.

This is a bit snarky I'll admit. But you know that she got the same information beforehand that you rec'd. Why even bother to be banded? She knew the ins and outs of it before she signed the consent. And if she had any other questions, she could have talked to you - her friend (who is a nurse and banded)... This makes me really sad :(. If you maintain your friendship with her, I hope you can encourage her to get the help she desperately needs. And, Jennifer, I'm sorry for you too. She really disappointed you and that sucks.

TPG

she most definitely had a psych eval. my office makes everone have one. i really do want her to succeed. i've known her forever, her and my sister used to paly dress up in my clothes and make up as little girls. but i honestly don't think she was emotionally ready for the band or any other WLS. Hopefully she will turn things around. and im very worried about her slipping her band. i mean i felt like crap a few days afterwards. i was happy to stick to popcicles and broth i was so miserable. and i have head hunger issues of my own but i can't fathom what thoughts would lead her to think she could eat like this just a few days post-op. Im still pissed but i will call her tomorrow and make sure she's ok

Yeah, cool off a little. Then call and check on her. I know you're concerned and rightfully so. Hopefully you can get her back on track.

WOW and I was worried that my 1/2 cup serving for dinner was heaping instead of level........:( lol

Your sisters friend will pay in the long run. You reminded her what can happen if she doesn't follow the Drs. plan. Unfortunately some people think that they get banded and the little weight-loss fairy (sister of the tooth fairy) comes in while you sleep and the weight magically falls off regardless of what they eat.

Hopefully she will be ok and reaize you are trying to help her and get with the program.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
