Just started mushies yesterday!

It was amazing how food can taste after being away from it for 2 weeks. I had tuna salad for my first dish into mushies. IT WAS SOOOO GOOOD! Last night it was a crab cake (very mushy) and mashed potatoes. I just needed a little bit, and I was happy. I had to be careful to follow the guidlines of how much I should have, cause I could have overdone it. I dont feel the weight of the food for a while after I eat. It was good though. Today, who knows... maybe cottage cheese.. maybe refried Beans.. who knows. I am just happy to have FOOD again. (oh, Even though I did lose 17 pounds on the post op liquid diet) lol Thats not too bad, eh~

I start mushies on Wednesday and the first thing I'm going to have is cottage cheese and then scrambled eggs. I can't wait because pretty much all I'm eating these days is Protein Drinks and yogurt... bleh! Oh well, I'm proud of myself for making it this far.

Be careful with scambled eggs. I just had one this morning. Its sitting kinda heavy in my tummy. Im sure its not the same for everyone, but take it slow!

Scrambled eggs aren't a problem for me at all. LOVE 'EM!

When I started mushies, mashed potatoes were on the top of my list. I make a whole packet of instant mashed potatoes and add Unjury chicken broth Protein Powder, which gives it a nice flavor and extra Protein. I then put it in half-cup Glad containers, which helps control the portion size.

I started mushies yesterday.

I can tell you, I was really nervous instead of excited, and I ended up not eating them until 8PM! I have never in my life been nervous about eating a GD egg!

Anyway, I took 2 hard boiled eggs, cut them in 1/2, added 1/2 tsp. dijon, 1 tsp low-fat mayo, and a dash of salt, and mashed the crap out of them with a fork.

It took me nearly 1/2 hour to eat it, and it was DELISH

This morning, I went to Kroger's (grocery store in the Mid-West United States for anyone outside of the US,) and they have a store brand of yogurt called 'CARB MASTER' 80 calories, 13 Protein, and 3 carbs. Low-fat as well. It's been very popular, so the flavor choices have really come a long way! It used to be peach, strawberry, and vanilla. Now they have those, plus raspberry, blueberry, strawberry-pomegranite, strawberry-banana, blackberry, and a few more. I got 3 of each to get me through the week.

I had my last Protein shake for Breakfast this morning, and for lunch, I had a yogurt. It took me FOREVER to eat it. I just WAS NOT hungry. But, I knew it was important to eat it!

I was surprised to hear someone say they needed 1200 calories/day during mushies. There is no possible way I could do that. I can barely manage 500-600/day right now.

I also got some small curd cottage cheese (which, for a calories boost, I like to put ranch dressing on it..... I know it sounds gross, but it actually tastes pretty nice!) and some Mexican Style Refried Beans. I figured that would be a nice Fiber addition :)

I can really only have about 1/2 - 3/4 cup of food at a time right now. Then I feel absolutely satisfied.

I find all of this just amazing!

Hugs,

Karen

Karen - do you have any liquid in your band? I started mushies (last Saturday) eating 600 calories too and was perfectly satisfied but my nutritionist said I needed to up the calories to 1200'ish. I struggle to get there because I'm not hungry enough, but I can definitely eat more than 1/2 cup of food. If you have an empty band and still feeling that restriction, you may be one of the lucky ones! I did find that as soon as I started mushies my weight loss stalled, so I'm trying to get to that 1200 since people say you need the calories to lose the weight. Good Luck!!

Gee, I was banded on the 10th and doc told me I could start mushies on the 31st, exactly 3 weeks after surgery. I'm jealous...

I started mushies two days ago, and I feel ya Karen, I was so nervous about being able to eat one egg. I waited like 30 minutes before I took a sip of Water.

I am still on mostly liquids and I have been eating mushies like one meal a day, I am really struggling with being back to work, and making sure I eat enough protien, and drink enough liquids. I did notice that I can eat about a cup of food and be sastified for three to four hours.

so far I have had, homemade mash potato's and homemade beef gravy, lake trout fish with the skin pulled off, cottage cheese and SF Jello, and scambled eggs. the rest of the day it is mostly my Soups oh and I have had applesauce. :)

For now there is no way I can make it to 1200 calories, getting in 600 is a struggle.

Oh guy I am so scared that I have done something to my band. I am having pain under my left breast for the 2 days. I am on the mush stage, but I think that I have eaten too much at one time or something. Do you think it might could be from the surgery? It was on Aug 10th. I wish that I was scared to death to eat an egg. I feel no restriction. NONE.. I feel full faster but and I think I just ate so fast or something, I have thought about doing liquids for a day and see if it gets better. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Allison

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
