Was anyone given a catheter?

Recommended Posts

I am having surgery next week and was wondering if it is normal procedure to be catheterized during surgery?

Calico,

I can't tell from your profile or previous posts whether you are male or female.

The_Best_Me may think that having a catheter after surgery was "great" but as for me (and ALL other guys I know), the mere thought of having a tube jammed into your "wee wee" is enough to bring us to our knees. You can read my catheter episode (among others) at this link:

http://lapbandtalk.com/showthread.php?t=8033&page=1&pp=15

Immediately after surgery, a nurse was waiting impatiently for me to urinate and had a catheter all rigged up waiting to go if I couldn't. She gave me a 3-minute head start and she followed me into the bathroom to make sure I wasn't faking it because I firmly believe she wanted to impale me with the f---ing thing.

Expect to get poked if you can't pee!!!!

Bring a recording of Niagara Falls or something if it will help.

Good Luck!

I was concerned about the same thing, cause I had one with my son and man oh man....I HATED it only because it would have tied me down~basically. I did not have one after surgery or prior to surgery....THANKFULLY phew~

Had it...put it in after I was alseep and came out before I started walking and before the paid meds really wore off. So for a female it was no biggie at all.

Nope, no catheter. My doc said that since it is such a short surgery that it wasn't necessary. However, as I was on my "final approach" and walking into surgery, they made me stop and use the restroom just minutes before entering the surgery room. Just as a precaution.

I'm SO VERY glad I didn't have a catheter.

I'm surpised individuals have a catheter. I didn't. I might have had one during surgery - I don't know, but it wasn't there when I was back in my room. The rationale behind this is to get you up and out of bed (it's great motivation for those who are less inclined).

yeah I had one but took it out myself after surgery cause she didnt appear to be in any big hurry to do so so I took it upon myself to remove it.

I didn't have one unless it was in and out while I was asleep. They had me up and doing my barium swallow IMMEDIATELY after I woke up and by 1 o'clock (after having surgery at 8:30am) I felt more comfty standing up than laying down!

I had one - It went in while I was under and came out the next day. The reason that I was give was that it was one less thing to worry about. I was on IV fluids until the barium swallow on day 2 so I would have been going quite frequently. I have my surgery at about 2 pm and was in my room by 4 pm, got up to walk at 6 pm and was told to rest for the remainder of the night (had compression booties - awesome). I was glad I had it although it was uncomfortable - getting in and out of bed day 1-2 was more uncomfortable that the catheter. Taking it out was not to bad - the nurse uses a syringe to empty the Fluid in the balloon that keeps it in your bladder and then gently pulls it out - just a little pressure no pain.

Ask your doc what his procedure is - I had no choice in the matter.

Good luck,

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
