I can't see any way it could. It is 0 calories. Obviously they are trying to steer us clear of them as they will be out once we have the band. You should ask the Dr. They may not want you to drink them but I don't think they would fatten the liver

As they have zero calories and zero fat, they wont fatten your liver. I would recommend trying to get off of them all together preop bc post op most docs dont want their patients drinking pop/soda due to the carbonation. As a former sunkist-aholic it was hard but I am glad I did it!

I would say they probably do not fatten the liver HOWEVER the liver is the bodys filter so it is dealing with the chemical sugar subsitute. That is a noticed problem for some people

I wouldn't rule it out so quickly. I have PCOS and diabetes and extremely insulin resistant so get insulin spikes over nothing. I have noticed that when I drink diet cokes I am hungrier and I don't know if these are studies or theories that your body reacts to sugar free drinks as if it were sugar, thus releasing more insulin which is what I think is the cause of fatty liver. But I'm not a doctor just someone who reads a lot

I am due for surgery on sep 11 and VERY paranoid about the whole fatty liver thing - i know i have one as I had a problem over a year ago and they ultrasounded it (but my doc told me that is what it would show due to my PCO and diabetes).. and that was 20 lbs ago so I am sooo worried about the surgeon going in there and having to do the more complex surgery (open u up) to get around my large liver. Cross ur fingers for me!

BTW I few diet cokes should not matter I would think these things take years to happen?? And I think my doc said you can drink snapple preop so they aren't concerned. I just avoid it myself.

Carbonated beverages have been shown to suck potassium from the body. If you are going to be on a calorie restricted diet (as we all are before the surgery) make sure you're getting enough potassium to compensate for the cola.

Does anybody know why some doctors don't even require a pre-op diet?

I have read a lot about that kind of stuff too and also where people who drink diet drinks actually gain weight. I never let my kids have stuff with artificial sugars. they are both healthy , thank God. I also cook for them vs purchasing prepared foods

I want to qualify my earlier answer. While I do not believe that it will fatten your liver as it has no calories. I think alot of surgeons have you cut out all carbonated beverages. I think it is more to get you used to not having them as you are not supposed to drink them after the surgery

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
