How much Protein should I get each day? My surgeon wants me to get all my protein from what I am eating. I find that VERY difficult to do. Anyone willing to say how many grams their Dr. recommends and good ways to get it? I'm a year out, lost 60 but have stalled BIG TIME!!!

I think you will get a variety of answers on the Protein thing. I get around 60 grams. I try to follow the "Zone" idea and get a 1/3 of my calories from Protein, 1/3 from carbs, and 1/3 from fats. But once again, you'll get a variety of answers.

Hope you find something that works for you.

My doctor/nutritionist wants me to be getting 80-90 grams of Protein and be eating 1000-1200 calories. I find it almost impossible to get it from food alone.

Thanks for the information. My surgeon wouldn't even say how many grams of Protein to get. He wants me to have no drinks, bars, nothing. Now at least I have something to go on. Thanks again!:D

Thats interesting. I've never heard of a doctor not suggesting Protein shakes of some kind. How are you supposed to get Protein when you're doing liquids only?

Also, there is a way for the dietician to calculate the amount of protein you should be eating (based on height and weight, and even gender I believe). My nutritionist suggested around 70-75 grams per day for me, based on those factors.

The general guideline I was given is 60-80gm/day for women and 80-100 for men. Now that I'm able to eat regular food, I find myself naturally falling into the middle of that range. If I'm a little low, I might supplement but otherwise am able to get it from food.

Every doctor and dietician have different guidelines. For instance, one of my dieticians doesn't like to focus on calories that much, she likes to focus more on Protein and carbs and only focus on calories if I'm having problems.

I'm not doing liquids only. I'm 1 yr out from surgery, but my weight loss has stopped. The only thing I can think of is not enough Protein. I think I'll shoot for 70 everyday and see if that kick-starts anything. Thanks everyone for your input!:D

Have you been eating right, do you have good restriction or do you need a fill, have you been exercising?

Being a year post-op -- you may want to look up the 5 Day Pouch test they are at www.5daypouchtest.com

and see if that will kick start you again.

You don't need to BUY or ORDER anything from them - just search out the website and you will get the idea of what you need to do for the 5 days.

As far as Protein amounts my dr office (the dietician) says I should be getting 70-80 grams of Protein a day.

I drink a 30g Protein shake in the morning (costco brand)... a greek yougurt at lunch time or two eggs or some tuna.... and then have steak/chicken/fish with a salad at night time...

I also eat some fruit and veggies at different times through the day - if I have the hunger pains.

Try to get back on track - if you surgeons office isn't real helpful - find some other form of information and support...it is NOT EASY - but you CAN do it, it takes TIME and EFFORT.

GOOD LUCK!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
