Anyone doing Low Carb pre-op diet?

Recommended Posts

I am getting the Realize band August 28th in Atlanta. My doc has placed me on a 2 week low carb diet. No liquids. Is this because of teh Realize band? ANyone else??

I am scheduled to be banded on 23 September with the Allegan lapband system. I too am supposed to start a low carb (basically Atkins) diet 2 weeks before the surgery. I am not required to be on a strict, liquids only type diet, just no more than 40 grams of carbs per day for 2 weeks. I am such a carb fiend tho, this will be an interesting time for me. I find it so interesting that there is such a wide variety of pre-op plans out there.

I cannot have more than 20 grams a day! eek! It's been going pretty good, though. Salads, bacon/eggs etc.. Nothing like what the liquid folks are going through. ; )

I've been doing a low carb diet for about 3 monthes now. I decided to go with the LapBand process but have stuck on the diet until I'm told weather or not I'm going to be banded and weather my Doctor wants me to stop eating low carb.

I have lost around 45 lbs in the last 3 monthes by only eating 20-30 carbs a day. The first week was the tough but after that the cravings for carbs go away.

Good Luck!

I'm going thru Kaiser and they have a 1200 cal pre op diet we are all suppose to follow - full of carbs! I stuck to it diligently for 2 weeks and gained 4lbs - what the heck is that all about. so my surgeon told me to cut out all the carbs - no milk, no fruit - nada! anyway, I've lost 34lbs since 6/1 doing low carb. Good luck!

I am on a low carb diet for the 2 weeks prior to my surgery. They are requiring 60grams or less per day and no calorie limit.

I have to do a liquid diet 24hrs prior to the actual surgery but thats all. It doesn't sound as bad after reading some of the other peoples diets.

I had the realizeband, and i WAS put on liquid five days out. The liquid diet is all about the liver not been too fatty. The doctor has to move the liver to do the procedure, and it makes it easier for the doc.

A fatty liver will shrink in repsonse to a low fat/low carb diet, not a "liquid" one. There are Protein Shakes that are too high in fat and/or carbs to make them good choices for a "liver shrink". Atkins-type seems to be the "go to" though, for most surgeons who want their patients to drop a lot of weight quickly! :)

My 2 week diet is 2 shakes and one small meal per day. That meal consists of a 4 oz piece chicken breast or fish and a green vegie. No butter and fat free spritzer can be used if I have salad. I don't start that until 9/23/9 though. I am thinking of doing low carb in the meantime as it gives you such a good start. Good luck everyone

My surgeron in Moneterrey (Zapata) puts you on a low carb diet - not liquid for 2 weeks prior to surgery.

The night before surgery - you are allowed a 'last meal' and you can eat anything you want - before 10:00pm.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
