CantB2noty 0 Posted August 16, 2009 Before surgery, besides being addicted to food, I was also addicted to diet cherry Dr. Pepper. Love it, but I was good and only drank a can a day.... I didnt have it on my pre-op diet and since surgery 3 weeks ago, I have been dyin for some. Just a sip as carbonation makes me burp worse than a sailor, and thats saying alot since I am married to one.. Tonight, i got my soda and was drooling watching it in the glass, waiting impatiently for it to go flat. My friend told me to stir it with a spoon vigorously, another friend of theirs had banding, and thats what she does to be able to have an occassional soda.. Stirred it with a spoon for about a minute, flat as a board. Tasted so darn good!!! And no burpies after...Yes!!!!!! Hope this helps others who dont want to wait..
jenrobbar951 0 Posted August 16, 2009 I too, am a soda addict and may end up trying your suggestion at some point. (I am still pre-op). I am not convinced that I will stop at an occassional soda, so I may not even attempt it. Who knows! HAHAHA! Thank you for the suggestion!!! And congrats on your surgery! jvinciguerra1 0 Posted August 16, 2009 a tsp. of sugar will take the fizz away
greytz 4 Posted August 16, 2009 It may take the fizz away in the glass but I don't think it stops the swelling in your stomach.
Shay7997 0 Posted August 16, 2009 I wouldn't bother. Soda has so much sugar and is many empty calories. I was a total mt dew and dr pepper addict before surgery. I have discovered life goes on without it.
Donnainva 0 Posted August 16, 2009 I found Irn Bru (3 cool points for the first American to know what that is) and it doesn't have much carbonation. It's also $3 a 16oz bottle so it'll be a rare treat for me. I just open the bottle keep it in the fridge and come back in a few hours.
Dana36 0 Posted August 16, 2009 I go for my final consultation with the surgeon tomorrow and am 100% a diet pepsi addict. I ran out on Wednesday evening, and have not had one yet. I'm drinking tea for the caffeine, and I like tea, but I swear, I'm still have psychological withdrawals! I miss it, but I've decided that I'm going to leave it in the past and not go back. Unforgettable 0 Posted August 16, 2009 3 cool points for me! I had a professor in college from Scotland that used to drink Irn Bru. Never tried it myself though. I've never been a big pop drinker so I'm having no big issues with it. Sometimes the thought of sipping a Sprite pops in my head but I think that's just because I know I can't have one right now. Although the thought of drinking it flat just grosses me out!! I know some docs will approve an occasional pop every now and then when you're about a year out. (personally born in Cincinnati and raised in Columbus, called it pop for the first 30 years of my life) Giving up soda was a total mind game for me. I was up to about 7-9 Diet Cokes a day (more on weekends) I simply stopped. I'm not Gandhi here with fantastic self restraint (you don't get to be fat with Gandhi-like skills!) If I knew exactly how I did it, it'd bottle that skill & sell it in non-carbonated form
bella5425 0 Posted August 16, 2009 i was banded april 22nd and i was a serious dr pepper addict - none of that diet mess for me - the real deal. anyway, i drank about 12 cans a day and i drank up until the night of surgery - i didn't have to do a pre-op diet - haven't touched one since although if i am w/ a friend and they have a soda i smell it and that is enough - i was missing it for the first month but now i don't miss it at all - am down 60 pounds since surgery and feel great w/out all that garbage in my body
Unforgettable 0 Posted August 16, 2009 Donnainva - I knew someone would call me out on my terminology! I even thought about using the word soda, but you know what, it's a freakin pop where I come from!! I can't believe you switched after 30 years lol
RestlessMonkey 7 Posted August 16, 2009 It's ok...don't feel bad about "pop". Where I grew up we called them all COKES. Sprite, Dr pepper, tab, didn't matter...it was all COKE.
GlenSand 1 Posted August 16, 2009 It's ok...don't feel bad about "pop". Where I grew up we called them all COKES. Sprite, Dr pepper, tab, didn't matter...it was all COKE. That made me giggle RM! My family does that too, also margarine is Oleo and any candy bar is a chocolate bar! It's funny how families can be so weird! I call it pop, and I haven't had one in 8 months! I don't know why it was so easy for me to give it up. It was diet Pepsi vanilla for me at least 5 a day. Now I drink Cherry Limeade Crystal lite (Walmart brand.) I just love how I feel minus the 68 lbs. No desire for coke or Oleo or chocolate bars! Just good for your body stuff for me!
barbie1978 22 Posted August 16, 2009 'pop' as we call it here ....well it's sounded good lately, BUT my doc was very specific about it...not only can the carbonation get stuck (yes, STUCK) where you would have to go get an unfill just for it to pass, but the carbonation can stretch the top stomach pouch which will defeat the purpose of the band...AND he said it basically feels like you are having a heart attack... so none for me...just BE CAREFUL to those of you who want pop....make sure it is F.L.A.T!! Just don't want anyone with a band to hur themselves!!
aprildurham23 0 Posted August 16, 2009 I was a diet coke addict too...now 9 months post op I've probably had around 4 or five sodas total in the last few months only. It's really not a big deal...but I don't really like it anymore because I don't like the taste. I guess after 7 or so months without it completely...I no longer like it.
