anyone else have problems being under or coming around?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if I was the only freak that had problems being under. While being rolled into the recovery room I had a 'fit'. I guess it was really bad, the female nurse said she had to take her jacket off because she broke a sweat. I do remember something from the event was something being placed over my face((the gas mask)) and swong my left arm to bat it away, and someone saying I am going to place under your arm ((then something soft under my arm)). My eyes were closed so it all was dark. what was strange was while being half asleep I thought I only swung my arm once, sort of like batting at a fly that wont go away. No it turned out to be a all out war between me and the nurses. They said they had to pad my bed and pin me down so that I wouldnt hurt myself.

I had a problem once where they, unbeknownst to them, didnt knock me all the way out and I could hear them talking and cutting me open. I was basically paralyzed and screaming inside my own head.....but yea, other than that I've been all good!

Some people get what's called emergence delirium, where while coming out of the anesthesia stage to full consciousness your brain has a hard time adjusting and isn't able to cope and differentiate what is going on. This leads a lot of times to kicking, screaming, hallucinating, etc.

I work on a post-op floor in the hospital and it can get so bad that it can take 5 or 6 nurses holding down a patient until they calm...keep in mind I work with kids, so these are 7 and 8 year olds.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
