Banded Aug 10th - just tired...

Recommended Posts

I was banded on Aug 11th. I was given 3 liquid form medications to take... 1) Vicadin Elixor 2) liquid antibiotic, 3) nausea suppository.

I've been taking the Vicadin Elixor before bed so I can get a great nights sleep, and have taken the 3 days of antibiotic. Fortunately have not needed the suppository to prevent nausea.

I was told by my surgeon that it is really important to only have clear fluids for the first week... such as Water with or without crystal light (which makes it much better) low sodium broths, and sugar free popsicles. I'm finding myself pretty hungry and look forward to being able to have Protein shakes. I've lost 18 pounds in 4 days since surgery and am concerned.

BUT it appears from what I'm reading in this thread that most people are doing the Protein Shakes within days of surgery...

Please share any thoughts...

Banded,

Every surgeon is different when it comes to both pre-op and post-op diets. You should really follow your doctors guidelines, because he probably came up with those based on his experiences in the past and he probably feels you'll be most successful if followed properly.

But yes after reading lots of threads you'll notice every doc is different. For instance, mine did only one day of liquids only, then about 2 weeks of pureed food, then about 2 weeks of soft food, and after that I could eat a regular diet. I read other posts where they were allowed to have soft food within a week or so. I wished so bad I could follow their guidelines because hey, if they could do it then why couldn't I? But I trust my surgeon and felt he had the best recommendations with the best intentions so I stuck it out and sucked it up, literally lol

Just a quick comment about the person who is drinking V-8 Splash. I was desperate to drink something that could knock out my Fiber serving as well as fruits/veggies, but my Dr. said absolutely no juice drinks, even V-8 juice/smoothie products as they are loaded with sugar. I looked at one label and did concur, they have way too much sugar to make up for the fiber they offer. Just keep that in mind, sugars, in any form, are bad!

Yes V8 and a lot of other juices, even "healthier" ones like Naked, etc have lots of sugar in them. Sugars themselves, however, aren't bad and I wouldn't agree that "sugars, in any form, are bad" and you shouldn't have them. It's when you overindulge that you run into the problem. I think everything is fine in moderation.

I see your point and agree that everything in moderation is key. With the exception of satisfying low blood sugar, I see no point in having sugar in any form in my diet, especially from juice, applesauce etc. But that is just me and I'm not diabetic, if I were I may think differently.

Belkita, I don't think anyone else has addressed your statement about a cough. I had a cough for 2-3 weeks after surgery. It was a dry cough, but it sure made my diaphram sore! I have mild asthma and have medical inhalers for that, so I just kept using them. Twice a day I use Asthmacort which is to help me enough so that I don't have to use my Provental rescue inhaler. Well, during that period after surgery, I had to use both every day! Finally I am back to normal, being about 5 weeks out . I had surgery on July 27.

Don't know if this is helpful or not, or if you do have a bit of asthma like me, but thought I would just let you know you are not alone with suffering from a cough post-surgery.

Good luck to you!

The same thing happened to me he was not really interested in what i was doing, but that just like everything else. I wanted this for myself and know one else. It was all about me and no one else. He has asked a couple of question but thats it. I've been married 28 years and have been up and down with my weight. So, its all about me and no one else. Hope this helps, just make sure you are doing it for yourself. I'm 52 and my health is important to me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
