Dehydration

Recommended Posts

yes, yes, yes

All of the posts describe my relationship with food and especially Water. I can tell you what I did when I was having the most difficulty -the first 7 days...

Everyone warned me that dehydration was a real possibility and some described visits to the emergeny room.

SO, I called my doctor, of course they put me on with the nurse, and told them how I was doing...eating only teaspoons full of broth and drinking 1-5 ounzes of Water.< /p>

They told me to watch for dizziness and nausea and to come in the next week.

I was glad that I called because then they had advance warning in case I had a severe reation. I didn't, but at least I knew that they would be ready for me.

Later, I went in and found out that they had put 2.5 cc's of a fill in without telling me and that my hernia repair was extensive!

Needless to say, they took out the fill.

BUT, 3 weeks later, and I STILL cannot drink much!

After tests, barium swallow... I learned that my diaphram was in spasms and that the liquid was sticking in my esophougus until...it got good and ready to go down.

SO, jsut to let you know the many possibilities...AND to encourage you to keep in constant contact with the doctor's office!

good luck....I am so thirsty

Unforgettable. . .:)

I moved on to stage 2 yesterday (even though it was formally today). . .(doctor approved. . .) but he did caution to not rush things. . .

So basically my options are broth, Jello, milk, applesauce, Protein shakes, or sugar free pops. . .not much fun but beats just broth and that clear Isopure Protein Drink stuff. . .

anyway. . .onward I go!

Are you allowed to have yogurt?

I've mentioned this in like a million other threads but I just love it so much! Greek yogurt is my new favorite thing. By itself tastes like sour cream. Mix in sweet stuff, puree fruit, splenda, etc and tastes amazing. I've been doing 1/2 cup yogurt with 1 tbsp reduced fat Peanut Butter. It has lots of Protein, low carb and the one I get (fage total 0%) has no fat.

I am doing much better with my liquids. Currently I'm getting in about 1 1/2 bottles of Water a day, 2 Protein Drinks and a popsicle. This is a BIG improvement for me and I no longer feel dizzy anymore. I WISH I could have yogurt like you guys, I'm not allowed thickened liquids until one week post-op. Oh well, I guess it doesn't matter since there is hardly a desire.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
