Preop diet question...

Recommended Posts

I start my preop diet on 8/19 for my 9/2 surgery. I work in sales and have 2 high level meetings during my preop. The first meeting is on 8/19, but I think I'll be ok to just have a Protein shake then because lunch is being brought in. My problem is that I have a lunch meeting on 8/27 and there's no way of getting out of it. It will be at a restaurant and with a client I've never met so I don't really want to get into my diet.

So my question is...is there a way that (for that day only) that I can eat my "dinner" for lunch and just have a Protein Shake for dinner? Will it ruin the whole preop if I do that?? Any answers would be great! Thanks!!

Megan, I'm on Day 8 of pre surgery liquid.. no problem... I suggest you order some kind of salad with chicken on top... and dressing some kind of light dressing on the side. Then mostly eat the chicken (protein) and some of the salad with as little dressing as you can get away with. Your lunch appointment won't even think twice. That's how "thin" people eat. Then I've been drinking ice Water with lemon slices in it when I go out with anyone, instead of soda.. I hate tea. The other day I went to Chinese with someone for a business lunch and I had cabbage Soup and ate the broth only, which is on the diet... so Soup is an option also.

Hope those suggestions help.

I'm sure you'll be fine. I don't see how that could cause you any serious problems at all.

I also wanted to suggest that you go on-line to look at the restaurant's menu (or call the restaurant and have them e-mail or fax it to you) before the lunch. There may be something on there that will work with your diet.

Even if you go with the plan to treat that lunch as your dinner, I find that it made me much less anxious (and much less likely to screw up) if I planned what I was going to order in advance.

Good luck with the meetings! These sacrifices are going to be SO WORTH IT!

Catherine

The purpose of the pre-op diet is to shrink the size of your liver. If your liver is discovered to be too big when opened up for surgery, many doctors won't perform the procedure because there is a risk of puncturing the liver and other complications. The diet is aimed at shrinking the liver to hopefully avoid that situation from happening.

yea each surgeon has a different protocol. The main thing is low carb/sugar. I had to follow a low carb low fat high Protein diet using medifast liquid products, not tasty at all!

So I talked to the nutritionist and she said it was fine to move my meals around. I had the lunch and actually found it very easy!! Thanks, all!!:frown:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
