Diabetic & lapband

Recommended Posts

Hi. I've posted a few times. I have Type II diabetes. I'm looking to have the band done and was wondering if anybody out there also has Type II diabetes and had the band done and what their results were. I really would like to get off most if not all my meds which is probably the main reason for the band would be to improve my health. At this time I'm taking Metformin 1000mg morning and night, Actos 45mg in the morning and then at night I take Januvia 100mg and also Prandin 10mg. As you can see I take quite a bit of meds for my diabetes. Thanks. :)

I too am a type 2 diabetic. I have been taking 2 glip/metformin 1,000/2.5 mg twice daily. Now 4 weeks post-op I've cut the amt in half. Hoping in a few more months to be able to drop them completely! :(

I've also gone from a WoW addicted computer hugging couch potato, to going to the gym 5 days a week. This is my 3rd full week of the gym and scary as it sounds I actually RAN a little yesterday  [lol wasn't pretty, but still].

Still early days for me but I'm SO very glad I got the band!

I was on metformin, avandia, and 40 units of lantus before surgery. When I started the 2-day all-liquid preop, my numbers were low enough that I didn't need any meds. During my hospital stay, they gave me small doses of insulin. After I got home Aug. 1, my readings were good enough that I didn't need any of my diabetes meds. However, in the past few days, my numbers have creeped up enough that I'm adding back the avandia. I have the kind of type 2 that disappears as I lose weight. Previously when I lost a lot of weight through Weight Watchers, I was able to stop all the diabetes meds. But had to add them back as I gained the weight back. I'm hoping they'll stay off this time.

Thanks everybody for your replys. This really gives me hope. I saw my surgeon the other day and he had mentioned the bypass might give me more of what I wanted but he told me to do what I felt comfortable with. I do have 6 mon. to think about it but I'm really leaning towards the band. I'm defintely not comfortable with the bypass.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
