Newly Banded! Caloric Restriction & Amounts

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I was just banded on 8/3 and even though I spent 2 years studying and going to support groups and learning everything I could learn I still have questions that I feel I should already know the answers to

Here are some figures:

Starting weight Nov '07: 333

Pre-Surgery Weight: 292

Banded on 8/3/09

Current Weight: 281.5

My concerns now are that since it seems I'm done loosing Water weight, I need to enter into a more aggressive stage of calorie restriction which is proving to be very difficult as my Protein shakes are on the high end (200) calories per serving and yet I am still missing my Protein requirements by ablt 10 grams. I am already in the process of selecting new shakes. However I am concerned about not getting enough calories and forcing my body into starvation mode.

My other issue is that now that the swelling as gone down restriction is rather minimal I can down a good deal of liquid before feeling satisfied. I had a whole can of Soup prepared and finished it over the course of 3 hours (it was very watery, but tasty!) Is this something that should be expected prior to my first fill? I tend to be a very fast healer, how long did it take for others before they were comfortable taking in more liquids?

Thank you all for your time and advise!

Claudia

I went through the same thing. I was told that the first 4 weeks are devoted to healing and that you are not trying to lose weight in that time frame. So you want to keep drinking your liquids. As soon as I got my first feel at 6 weeks post op The feeling subsided somewhat but not completely it actually took me 4 fills I am now at 6.3 before I actually got that full feeling. I would just try to be patient as we are all different and the band works differently for all of us. I think once you get a fill you will feel much better

I drank easily from recovery on. I had no fill in my band (except some primer) during surgery. Many who have issues post op find their surgeon filled their bands some.

And yes the first 6 weeks or so are for healing. Your body was traumatized even if you don't realize it and is using calories etc to heal. Now is not a time to lose. My doc recommended a specific shake for me and that's the one I used. AND I didn't even GET Protein week 1!

Don't worry about caloric intake, loss, gain, etc right now. Just heal and get that 64 oz of Water in each day.

Wow. Haven't been on this site for a full day and already I've gotten advice that put me at ease

Thank you so much for the sound advice. You are right. Hydration and Protein are paramount right now.

*goes to have some more soup*

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
