What meds did your doctor give you after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hey kids - just wondering, if you already had surgery, what pain meds did your dr give you to go home with? Mine gave me Tylenol with codeine, which really sucks and really doesn't help at all. I was expecting something alot stronger. Just curious what you all have.

Hey LL67,

I have a problem with most narcotics, and was VERY vocal about it. I can't take morphine, demerol or codeine... they all make me vomit.

I told them the only pain-killer that I've ever been able to tolerate is Vicodin.

My doctor prescribed Hycet, which is liquid Vicodin (Vicodin = Hydrocodone + Acetominophen)

If the codeine isn't working for you, ask for Hycet.... it's made a WORLD of difference for me. I don't get queasy, which is very important, it takes away my pain, and it doesn't make me loopy.

Oh....my script calls for 3 teaspoons every 4 hours.

Good luck!

Karen

Also was prescribe Lortab, but switched to regular tylenol after day 2 as needed. My doctor also approved aleve on occasion as well, and that helped with swelling in the stomach and gas pains in my shoulder.

I was sent home with Duladid (morophene) tablets very small, Protonix - 1 a day for six months, and Reglan 30 tabs to take as needed. and liquid regular adult tylenol, I have only had to take the duladid once a day now and tylenol twice a day so far so good.

Gas-x strips have been my best friend

I was sent home with two good sized bottles of hydrocodone. I believe that is generic percocet. It takes the edge off, but I kinda miss the morphine drip I had in the hospital! Today is my first full day home so I am being generous with myself and taking the pain med every 4-5hrs. Think I will try to start weaning myself off of it tomorrow. I hope to be in good enough shape to go back to work on monday.

Man I can not stand being drugged and out of it. I stopped them from even giving me morphine in the hospital! I am a Restless Monkey I guess.

You guys on hydrocodone, morphine, and opiate...remember it is VERY constipating. Even on liquids you should "go" by day 3 or so. If you don't, call your doc.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
