Beer VS Soda

Recommended Posts

Wanna hear something I've found to be strange? I'm sure you are all aware that after banding, you arent suppose to drink carbonated beverages... well, being me, I've taken a sip from my daughter's soda and BAM! Instant burp.

...but get this. Beer isnt a problem! I tried it on vacation in New Orleans and I've not had any problems with it at all.

Anyone know the difference?

I don't know why the beer didn't bother you. I can do soda and it doesn't bother me. I haven't tried beer (don't care for it).

I'm the exact opposite. Sodas are fine, beer not so much. I wonder, though, if it's partly because of which we prefer?

I rarely RARELY ever drank a soda. 8 ounces of coke was more than enough for me. If I have/had one I'd tend to sip because I don't really like them.

Beer, on the other hand, is something I heartily enjoyed 2-3 times a year or so (I don't drink as much as I did in my younger wilder days) and I tended, at least for the first beer or too, to drink them with gusto. I wouldn't chug but there wasn't any dainty sipping going on either. PLUS...I drink my beer from the bottle. A soft drink, I'd pour over ice (and that removes some carbonation)

So I think it's a function of how we drink as much as it is what we drink.

My doc told me, at one year out, that now if it doesn't HURT I can drink carbonation (follow your docs orders) and I have found if I pour a beer into a glass and purposely pour it so it foams, it goes down easier. I miss drinking from the bottle ( I did love an icy bottle of cold shiner bock) but that way hurts too much still.

My aunt thinks its because soda has forced carbonation in it and beer's bubbles come from the fermentation process...

hmmm... the plot thickens! hahaha!

It's not a daily thing... Only a once in awhile treat. ;)

I gave up soda completely because it's bad for you. Getting the surgery was motivation enough to give up that bad habit. Beer, hum...... I went to Belize a couple of months back and I freely admit that I love Belikin beer (national beer of Belize) so of course I ordered one. Took 30 minutes to drink about half of it and that left me belching like I never would have imagined possible. So I didn't finish it and I haven't had any more beer.

I've had wine coolers and sparkling wine with no problems... but champagne might be pushing it. haha!

I tried Beer shortly after getting the band (because actually I forgot it was carbonated...I know a blond moment) I pretty quickly didn't feel very good. I have not and will not try it again. I have had a couple sips of soda with no problem. I wouldn't dare drink a whole glass though.

I asked about carbonated drinks at my appointment today and was told that so long as they are low cal I can have them. Obviously I shouldn't drink them if they cause me problems but if they don't then its OK. Plus of course Water is preferable .

I find soda is WAY more bubbly and carbonated than beer. I can drink beer quite easily, soda makes me feel bloated full of gas. I dont like it anyway and I cant for the life understand how people actually like Diet Coke - tastes like drain cleaner!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
