My surgery date is Thursday, August 13. I’m pre-op two days of Clear Liquids only and I’m starving. Anyone have any advice on how to get through this???:(

Aren't you having any shakes? They really helped me. Hang in there - the first few days are the worst. Also - drink a lot of calorie free stuff. The liquid fills you up as well.

Change your focus. Go for a long walk, take a nap. Anything that deters you from thinking about food.< /p>

If i could make it 2 weeks on liquids, you can do this!! You just have to make sure you are drinking enough. You may think you are, but make sure you drink enough besides shakes. Water and crystal lite were my savoirs. I made sure they were very cold and i always drank a little more than I thought that I needed. It helped me battle those starving cravings. You can do it if you decide to do this. You're the only one who can put food to your mouth, and know that this hunger DOES go away or at least lift. It will really help you do to this for your post-op, because you have no choice and will only be drinking for 10 days. Think of this as your time to get used to liquids, rather than something you have to do. I'm sure you'd rather get over the hard part before having surgery, instead of going through it all at the same time. Good luck. And you CAN accomplish this!

So true, and If you get through the first 3 days no cheating the cravings and the hunger typically subside. Keep yourself well hydrated. You will be OK. remember this is the turning point for the rest of your life. This too shall pass. Imagine how you will feel 50lb from now. Great way to jumpstart your new life!!!!!! Hang in there!

I understand just what you are going through, we are both in the same boat. First drink your Soup and then some Jello. Drink, drink and more drink, oh lets not forget to pray.

Do everyone have to do liquid before the surgery, and why is it that each person time line is different (how long they have to do liquid)

CBarnesL....Re your first post....what to look for in a doctor. An excellent support program. A support group, nutritionist on staff to answer questions as you run into them. Not having to wait long periods of time to get in for a fill.

Re your second post ... liquid pre-op diets. NO, not every doctor prescribes a liquid pre-op diet. You will quickly discover that all doctors are different on pre- and post-op diets and even what you have to do after a fill! For example, my pre-op diet was two weeks, two Protein shakes a day and two meals that consisted of 3 oz of lean Protein and raw or steamed vegetables. Some docs do all liquid, some do 1 meal a day, some use Optifast. You just have to ask your doctor the details.

The OP (original poster) has 2 days of clear liquid pre-op. She may have had a specific diet prior to that as well.

I think you are talking to me?

I started with a large group that has satelite offices , many surgeons etc... boasting to have the most experience etc.

After my first visit the little voice in my gut told me mmmmmmm something is not right, but I wanted to do this. so I proceeded to the preop tests, more red flags, and as I called for testing results etc or to ask questions I was calling a call center, lots of chatter in the background talking to people who could not answer my questions, could not contact the person I wanted to contact, call back requests not answered, promises to call by someone on a certian day never happened etc... basically shotty service if you will. Made me more nervous.... I am not one to whine or need a lot of attention but if I do call I do expect to be helped in a timely manner. So basically I found an individual dr (well known and accomplished) who has a knowledgable staff who answers the phone and follows through. So now I am in a fight trying to secure my records from the first office and for some reason they can't seem to find 2 componets.... hummm interesting they faxed me piece by piece over a weeks time. I just don't trust them to cut me open and then follow up with me and this is a long / lifetime commitment and I need to be comfortable knowing I have a competent dr and staff.

Bottom line if your gut speaks to you listen unless it says it wants an ice cream sundae LOL If something doesn't seem right it most likely is not! RUN FOR YOU LIFE!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
