What did you do to survive Clear Liquid pre-op diet?

Recommended Posts

I only have to do 3 days - but it is severe, just crystal light, broth, sf popcicles & Jello. What did you do to survive? Any tips?

Thanks!

Wonton Soup broth, Otterpops, Water and Crystal Light.

Cream Soups were my crutch - cream of chicken, cream of broccolli, cream of mushroom(strained), ..they actually give you a full feeling - and they are warming - unlike shakes ...

I'm on 1st day of two day Clear Liquids pre op, yes it sucks. Decaf coffee is helping me get through it and the though of a new me.

I am not even supposed to have decaf coffee on the clear liquid. Only decaf tea, no coffee at all. No Protein drinks, no cream Soups either.

Hello. That was my pre-surgery diet as well, only it was 2 weeks long. You can do this! It's only 3 days. And it really helps you prepare for post-op when you can't have anything but liquids for 10 days ---without the possibility of cheating. So think of it that way. After the first day, you will stop being as hungry and be fine with liquids. As long as I stayed full on liquids, I was fine. But if I couldn't drink for some reason, I would get STARVING. I would just make sure that you drink plenty, even if you are peeing all the time!

Wow, clear liquids only? For 2 weeks? I understand liquids including Protein shakes, creamy Soups, but clear liquids are like virtually no calories! broth has like 50 calories a cup right? The rest is all sugar free, zero calorie stuff.

I just read the dr's instructions again and it even said "do not strain soups, only clear broth". So much for straining the wonton Soup or cup of noodles - that sounded good!

Thanks for the encouragement and advice to drink constantly!

Luckily I don't have to do the liquid or calorie restricted diet. I just have to eat lean meats, veggies and low carb foods. She asked me not to do anything such as Atkins or anything unhealthy that may raise my cholesterol since i'm doing it for a month prior to the surgery. I did however have to do a liquid diet for 4 days prior to having my son, I was on Mag for high bp and it was the chicken broth, popscicle and Jello thing and OMG I hated it BUT I did it because I had to do it, no choice, YOU will do the same, this is a decison you made.......to have this surgery, no one is forcing you into it, you've come this far so I have total faith in you that you WILL DO IT because YOU HAVE TO..........this i believe will be the easiest in our journey, we all have bad lifestyle eating changes to overcome. Goodluck girl

Thanks for the encouragement! I know I can do it. Hearing that other people lived through it does help!

Thanks, I was thinking any kind of Protein would help. Like those Special K Protein drinks. I will have to see if this is allowed.

Be sure your doc allows Protein Drinks. I had to do two days of Clear liquids and my pre-op instructions specified that I should have no Protein drinks or milk products during the 48 hours before surgery. All I could have was Jello, SF popsicles, broth, Water, crystal light, decaf/herbal hot/cold tea.

I got through it by stocking up on the products I could have and keeping myself hydrated. Also, my family avoided preparing meals and eating in front of me. It really was not as bad as I thought it would be.

I am on day 3 of my liquid diet. I will be banded on Aug 25th. My Doc requires a 2 week liquid diet before surgery. I wish he only required a 3 day diet like some people on this board. I am surviving on EAS strawberry Protein Drink, sugar free Jello, sugar free ice pops, chicken broth and lots and lots of Water. The EAS drink tastes just like strawberry quick. I purchased those 4c individual packets to add flavor to the water and it has been working so far. I even freeze them to make a nice slushie drink. I do get hungry from time to time but I try not to think about food. I just think about the danger I can put myself into by not allowing my liver to shrink, and thats enough for me. I wish you the best of luck hopefully we will be able to survive this.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
