Hair Loss at an alarming rate - I need help!

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery 4/21, so it has been about 3.5 months out. I am losing my hair at an alarming rate. I mean every morning when I wash my hair, I can see a bunch of hair (at the hair catcher thingy) and everywhere in the house. I am the only girl in the house so I know that it is my hair.

I am eating the right amount of Protein and mainly all food group (not much on fruits though). I have heard it can cause from the anesthesia; however, when will it stop? What can I do in the mean time to help this?

Thank you so much,

Anissa

This same exact thing is happening to me. I was banded 4/23, though I have only lost 34 lbs to your 50. Congrats on that!!!

I asked the Nutritionist, she recommended another Protein Shake a day. She says to keep Vitamins up( I was) and to get enough Protein (I thought I was).

But, I have been online and read that you usually start noticing hair loss around 3 mos after some major surgery or stress to the body. The hair is on a 3 mo cycle. That fits time wise with me as well.

I read that it usually corrects itself after 3-6 mos on it's own. New growth will start. I also read you can take Biotin in the meantime and that can help. I have got to check into that next as I too am losing an alarming rate of hair, several times a day.

I will be watching this post closely, as while I have tons of hair, the rate I am going I am not sure for how long.

samathazzz - me too even my husband said I need to see a doctor. I don't have much hair to begin with, so I am really scared. It just started happening about a month ago though. I am going to try adding another shake to see if it will help.

Thanks again,

Anissa

Hi Anissa,

I'm kind of bummed more people are not commenting on this.

My kitchen floor is resembling the wild west with hair clumps blowing through it. I vacuum twice a day now and wear my hair back to cook. Gross!

Let me know if you find out anything new.

Thanks,

Samantha

The Hair loss will get better but it will not be a quick fix. I had my band placed in January and started having major hair loss about 4 months out. There are a variety of reasons for this and yours may be one or a combination of more than one. I had bloodwork to monitor my Protein levels and Iron. All were ok. I do take thyroid medication and lab test showed that I needed a small dose increase so have had that in place for about 5 weeks. I work on getting in at least 80 gm of protein per day. Had been getting about 70 and NUT said to increase to 80-90. I use Nioxin hair products and also take Biotin 5000mcg per day. Each of these things may or may not be doing what I want them to do but I figure in tandem, it will prove to be a benefit. I was at my hairdressers last week and we can now see new hair coming in. While the hair loss is still continuing, the rate of loss is slowly decreasing. Thankfully I have always had lots of hair because literally I could just turn my head to the side and hair would fall out. Instead of pet hair, I am cleaning up my hair from where I sit in a chair. Makes me crazy. While this is frustrating, it does appear to be a relatively normal side effect of WLS surgery. I was just not expecting this much.

I am just a few days under 4 months post-op and just last week starting losing a lot of hair. Actually, it was my husband who noticed. I have always shed hair in the shower since my hair is to the middle of my back but now it is coming out like crazy. I'm not too concerned yet since I have very thick hair but it is gross. Everywhere I go I leave hair behind. My doctor has been monitoring my blood levels quite regularly for Iron and thiamine and I am on two thyroid meds. If I just run my fingers through my hair I get a whole hand full of hair. I started on Biotin a few days ago but haven't yet noticed any improvement. I'm sure I am getting enough Protein so there must be another cause.

Please let me know how you all are doing in a few weeks.

Take care,

Donna

Hi guys,

Yesterday, I went to get a hair cut (short) to help with the falling out (my own thinking) and also staring to take Biotin and watch my Protein intake. Hopefully, us girls will stop shredding and start to grow some new hair soon. I've email my NUT and see what else I need to do. Will let you all know what she said.

Hang in there, this too shall pass :-)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
