Hi all,

I am new to this site. Glad I found it, I am learning alot more than I could from the Dr's brochures.

Anyway, about me.

I am scheduled for my LB on Sept. 22. I held off for that date because my grandson's birthday party is Sept 5th and I don't want to be on the pre-op diet and have to explain myself to anyone anymore.

I am really lucky in that I didn't have to fight my insurance at all. I saw my Dr for the first time in July and within 2 weeks I had the ok for surgery.

Now about me. I hear it from anyone I mention the surgery to, "why are you doing that, you are not overweight" Well I am for me. I am 5'4" and weighed 205 when I saw the Dr. but I am down to 197 now. But I felt best way back when I was 145, pre breast cancer.

I am now 5 years cancer free so that is one thing I don't have to worry about anymore. However, I have high blood pressure, sleep apnea, lymphedema (from the mastectomy) neuropathy from the chemo, fibromyalgia since the cancer, fatty liver, family history of diabetes... I could go on, all problems of the overweight.

I can't exercise the way I did in the past because of the neuropathy in my legs. If I stand for too long my legs go numb and I fall. I can't even ride my bike anymore because I fall off when my leg gives out.

I am a bread-a-holic, I sometimes go out to dinner with my family and pack the food to go if the bread is good. I will fill up on that delicious bread. I especially love Olive Garden, Outback, and my new favorite Logan's Steakhouse. (glad there are none of those here in CT) I worried that I might never be able to eat bread again, but some here have said they do so I am a bit encouraged. I know I can't make a meal of it like before, but I can have a piece once in a while if I chew really well.

My Dr encouraged me to see the surgeon who will do my lap band. I am nervous about the upcoming surgery because of what I read on line before finding this site. You all have made it somewhat easier to realize this is the best thing for me and I will be healthier after.

I will continue to read more and by the time Sept 22 comes along I will be ready. Peggie

I too am a bread-a-holic, albeit recovering. Logan's rolls are amazing. Oh, and the biscuits at Cracker Barrel aren't too shabby either. Ok, if you aren't too tight you MAY be able to eat bread, but let's be honest, hopefully you won't be able to eat much of it. I don't think I could have the Logan's rolls at all now, and I haven't tried. I have, however, had the biscuits at Cracker Barrel. Now, I eat 1 or almost 1, instead of 3 or 4 or 5:sad:.

Good luck with your surgery. Hopefully you will be able to get rid of many of your medical problems quickly.

Mickey,

Congradulations on your date and having insurance pay.

I was self pay, and would do it all over again in a heartbeat. One thing I will say is that your eating wants do change. Thank god I am not a bread-a-holic, I have tried so many times, and just can not eat it. it swells way to much. I know my wants have sure changed, chips, rice, potatoes, soda were my vice.. now... I can pass them by.

Follow the band rules and you will do great, best of luck...

Lois

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
