Concerned about threat of Pneumonia after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I've read some posts on here about the threat of Pneumonia after surgery and having to cough a lot to get rid of all the congestion. Where is the congestion coming from - how is it caused by the surgery? Any info welcome.

Thanks

It's because of the anesthesia that there are risks of pneumonia. You have to make sure to take deep breaths post surgery and they should give you exercises to do so in order to prevent the chance of getting it.

In hospital I commented to one of the nurses that I couldn't get a really deep breath in. She had noticed overnight that she could "smell" the anasthetic on me, which apparently dissipates with deeper breathing. So, she went off and brought me back one of those 3 ball breathing "toys" where you have to suck in to get the balls to move to the top of the chamber. Post surgery, I couldn't even get the first ball to move!!! But, the "toy" was a great motivator for the deeper breathing, and progressively, over two weeks, I was able to get all the balls up in each chamber. So, you need to work at the breathing, because like you, I was scared of developing respiratory complications.

Good luck,

Mandy

It's partly anesthesia but also other reasons...anyone who was active and suddenly becomes bedridden is at risk. The cause is "atelectasis" and Fluid collects in your lungs. When we lie in bed we breathe more shallowly than when we are up and moving.

Fluid doesn't belong in the lungs...while they are moist, they are meant to hold air, not liquid.

Deep breathing takes care of this. That's why you're given an incentive spirometer and told to use it.

Walking post op also helps clear your lungs (as well as improve circulation and prevent clots)

As long as you aren't one of those to take your pain med and sleep round the clock, you'll be ok.

The pneumonia doesn't just BANG happen. There are indicators, including a very mild fever. So walk, use your spirometer, sit up when you can (that helps too) and you'll be fine!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
