Question about hot vs. cold foods?

Recommended Posts

Hi. I was banded this past June. I had my first fill almost 2 weeks ago. So far, I've had just minimum restriction.

I just had an experience and I wanted to ask if anyone else has experienced something similar: This evening I made broiled salmon fillets. They were probably between 8-9 oz. each. When I had it for dinner, when it was piping hot, I was able to finish the whole fillet. It was a very moist piece of salmon, it fell apart when you put the fork in. Just now, I had a little more however it had been refrigerated since dinner. I got that kind of "full" feeling after just 4 ounces (half the fillet). I'm assuming this is because the salmon was a little less moist since it was cold?

So I guess my questions is, do you judge your restriction level and whether or not you're at your 'sweet spot' based on how hot foods go down or cold (since it seems there is such a big difference)? I also don't eat chicken or red meat, so my primary diet consists of seafoods and tofu (which makes me think I'll probably need more restriction than someone else who does eat meats). Perhaps this is why I don't have much restriction after my fill.

Thanks in advance!

It doesn't make any difference, for me at least. It matters how well I chew, WHAT the food is, if it's well done (for steak...gotta have it well done) but otherwise cold/hot doesn't make any difference.

I don't seem to have any difference between hot and cold foods, although textures do make a diference. If meat is very dry and chewy it doesn't go down very well for me.

I can only eat about half a salmon fillet, a piece the size of a credit card is the portion I can eat and it fills me up for ages. You don't say how long after you tried the second portion but if less than 4 hours Maybe you were still full from the first serving?

It was probably 5 hours or 5 and a half hours after the first serving. I think I've come to the conclusion that I'm really just not tight enough and so I'm looking forward to my second fill on the 25th.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
