waking up hungry

Recommended Posts

So the book that I was given from my dr's office at my initial visit (prior to actually confirming the surgery) said that one of the effects of the band is that I would not wake up hungry in the morning. For those of you that feel like you have reached restriction- is this something that you experience- waking up without hunger? If I still wake up hungry is that a significant variable that should be included when going in for another fill on monday? ****I have gotten stuck two or three times when I do not chew well enough or have dry meat but my hunger is still there so I am trying to decide on another fill or not- I'm scared to go into the red zone after the stuck episodes.

I don't wake up hungry but honestly I never have. So I guess I'm not a good help here!

How to decide on a fill...

here's a PDF file on page 2 is the chart in my doc's office

it should help you decide

and yes being stuck, unless you are SUPER tight, is a sign of mechanical error...ie you didn't chew well, you ate too fast, you took too large a bite It doesn't really indicate "the sweet spot" or "the green zone"

I've also found hunger can relate to WHAT I choose to eat. I'm not diabetic but if I have more carbs I get hungrier faster, more Protein I can go longer (which makes sense; it takes our bodies longer, generally, to digest the protein) So look at WHAT you're eating.

If you can eat over 1 cup or so of food, have a meal with adequate Protein, and still get hungry "too soon" you need a fill. Make sure though that you're really "hungry" and not just nibbling or bored or whatever.

OH and here's that chart! :scared2:

I don't know about the rest of the info in the file; i just did a quick and dirty google search for the chart.

I still get hungry in the morning. The band is not supposed to eliminate hunger, but it helps you feel satisfied for longer after eating less food. It seems that many people are tighter in the morning than at night, so it might be difficult to eat in the mornings for some people, but I don't see why the band would make you not get hungry at all in the morning.

If I eat a good dinner at 8 and am up late, I can get REALLY hungry by 2AM. Since my doc says "NO SNACKS" and I'm trying mightily to comply, I go to bed hungry. (I never did that pre-band). I can be TRULY hungry (I mean, 3 oz of steak at 8pm only goes so far) but tune it out and fall asleep...and when I wake up...

I AM NOT HUNGRY! Don't know why though because like I said I never ever wake up hungry. If I could bottle that and sell it, and stretch it 24 hours, I'd be a rich rich Monkey!

That's one of the goofy things about this whole WLS thing.

Everybody and his brother says "THIS is how it will be" after your surgery.

Ain't so.

It is SO individual. EVERYONE'S responses are so different. There are, of course, SOME commonalities in everyone's experience, but the reality is that everyone will have an entirely different outcome, both in the experience, and the result.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
