Help! I was just banded Tuesday, August 4th and cannot get rid of the gas in my new little stomach. I am taking mylicon drops and GasX when I sip my Protein Drinks or yogurt, but the chewable vitamins killed me last night. I'm afraid to sip, sip sip because of the gas. Any suggestions?:wink2:

First...are you sure you are supposed to take the Vitamins yet? Can you call your doc and ask? I was told not to chew anything...including vitamins...until mushies.

Please confirm that; going a few weeks without a Vitamin won't hurt you as much as chewing something before your stomach is healed. Ok?

If you'll check with your doc about that and then post back I will try to help you; but I think that may be the culprit.

Thx. I will stop Vitamins. That was a horror. My post op instructions specifically say to use the chewables, so I did! I would rather get my Protein drinks and fluids down right now so I can rehydrate.

Unless you have a medical condition (can't think of one off the top of my head) that puts you in danger without Vitamins for a few days, I think that may be it.

Make sure you get some plain old Water in too. It will keep you hydrated and shouldn't irritate your stomach. But you will have some gas over this time; your digestive tract is getting used to the change, and you are healing.

Walking helps, and trying to not swallow air (ie no straws) when you get your fluids in.

If you are worried about getting though the weekend; call and ask your doc though.

However, if you feel "ok" (you are just a few days post op) when you DONT take the Vitamins, let them wait until you start mushies.

Right now hydration (64 ounces of water/fluids) is most important! And not being miserable! :scared2:

You should be drinking liquids only? I was banded on 8/3. I have alot of gas also. Put heating pad on your back and on your abdomen. Drink hot tea and GasX. Vitamine's already??? Hope you feel better soon!

don't put a heating pad over surgical sites without your surgeon's approval...if you have sutures that dissolve with heat and they are superficial you may dissolve them prematurely. :scared2:

Thanks Monkey. I appreciate the feedback. I was using a sports bottle with a straw. Maybe that added to the problem. I was really trying to not swallow any air by tipping my head back to swallow, but maybe it was not enough.

Thank you for responding. I may try a little Decaf hot tea later!

I'd pass on the straw for a few months actually. tipping your head back won't make a difference; you swallow the air in the straw. A little goes a long way post op.

I am so with you about the gas, I have been able to get rid of it somewhat by using ice packs on my belly and holding a pillow to cough but getting up to walk around the room has helped too... I cannot wait till this gas is out of my system, I seem to fart better than I can burp if that makes sense... LOL my shoulder is still hurting a lot from the gas the only thing that helps are ice packs and pain medication

I did the same thing but stop taking gasx and walk on the treadmill and trust me that gas will release in 30 min.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
