What is the deal? *rant*

What is the deal with all the people who have been banded in Mexico trying to convince everyone else to get their surgeries done there? I am not saying that there is anything wrong with getting banded in Mexico, but there are certain added risks and inconveniences when making the decision to get banded in any foreign country.

There is also another category of people out there who like to sugar-coat the surgery in general and its possible complications to newcomers. They also like to preach about how gastric banding is superior to all other forms of bariatric surgery.

I don't understand why people can't just share their own personal experiences and allow others to use that information to come to their own conclusions. Every one is different. They have different priorities, needs, fears and everything else. Just because something worked for you does not mean that it will work for everyone else.

So, in summation. Just because you got banded in Mexico, doesn't mean that the guy who is thinking about getting the bypass or the sleeve in NY needs you to "enlighten" him. Just give your honest experience, and let that guy decide if it's for him.

This is surgery people, not some kind of contest.

I have to agree with you. I don't post alot but I READ ALOT. I would swear there are those posting on here that have a personal or professional "agenda."

Some may.

I've heard some get kickbacks from their Mexican doctors if they refer Americans to them. Not saying that's happening a lot, but I have heard of it.

I probably have not been reading a lot of the same posts, but I never felt those I read by people banded in Mexico were trying to promote having surgery done there.

I am fortunate to have my surgery covered by insurance, but if I was self-pay, I would seriously consider having it done in Mexico. Mexico has been doing Lap Band surgery longer than the US, and many US bariatric surgeons have been trained on lap band by Mexican surgeons. A think post operative care & programs are an import part of the weight loss process, so I definately would opt to have surgery done close to home. But if cost was an issue, I wouldn't hesitate to have it done in a foreign doctor, by a surgeon and facility that has been checked out.

Think there are just a lot of people on here that are passionate about their experience and you should take it for what it is. When most people post a thread, they are usually asking a question about how someone else feels about a certain issue. I have seen a lot of threads on here where someone asks "has anyone been banded in Mexico". Obviously, they are asking for anyone who has been banded there to give there opinion about it. I don't see all good things. I have also read some very bad experiences about there and everywhere in between. I just take it for what it is worth. I have my own experience and my own feelings and nothing I read on here will diminish or take away from that. It is good to read about other experiences and share mine though.

I must have missed some posts. I was just banded in Mexico yesterday. As a matter of fact I'm still laying in the hospital bed. I choose Mexico because insurance wouldn't pay and I didn't have enough cash to get it done in the states. It was a terribly hard decision to make, and think one should take a lot of time to decide about banding, especially in a foreign country. My experiance has been pretty good. The nursing staff is very pleasant but they do things a little differntly, than in the us. It hasn't been bad just different! I'm open to answering any questions people ask about my experience, but one should definetly research and make up their own mind.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
