Hi,

I just wanted to toss some info into the mix. I also live in Florida and I am self-pay. I am going through Shands at UF. My total cost including the initial surgeon consult is $15340. This includes 5 fills and an overnight stay in the hospital.

If your limitation is cost and you want to stay local you might look into other hospitals. I don't know where you are in Florida, but Shands is located in several cities and has an excellent reputation.

Good luck whatever you do!

FailureIsnt....I paid cash for my surgery. It was $15,000. Period. That's it. Everything included -- surgeon, surgery center, anesthesiologist. Anybody who is paying cash (or through financing) for their surgery, should ask up-front for a full disclosure of exactly what they have to pay for and how much.

I am having my surgery done by Dr. Brown in Denver, he and Dr. Metz at the same practice charge $9900. The surgery is performed at St. Luke's/Presbyterian hospital, with all the resources of a major hospital available. Dr.Kirshenbaum, also in Denver, is about the same.

I did get some prices from Mexican surgeons, the cheapest was Aceves for $6300. Dr. Rumbaut was $7900, Dr. Ortiz $7300.

I had the same concerns about aftercare, and it is much easier for me to get to Denver. Realizing now how often I will be going in for fills/checkups, I am really glad I am going to a U.S. doc. That said, I would consider Mexico for plastic surgery -- no need to go in monthly for fills!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
