when can I eat spicey mexican and chinese food?

Ok, I know there is a similar thread posted, and I've read all that and will continue to, but my question is a bit different.

I am starting my 3rd week, and this whole time all I can think about is eating Mexican tacos, enchiladas, Beans, and mostly SALSA! and chips!

If I'm not thinking about that, I 'm thinking about hot and sour Soup, eggrolls,etc...

SPICEY!

boohoo..what can I eat and WHEN? ..and will the spicey foods make me sick???

My first "soft" food was a chile relleno. However, we're all different. You've had many issues I didn't, so don't use me as a ruler! :ohmy:

Your doc can tell you when....

but there is no reason for it to make you sick unless it made you sick preband.

thanks restless..I have an update!

Today, I finally found out why I've had such a problem -I had a hiatal hernia repaired, which I thought I would, but it was extensive...

so FINALLY the doc listened when I said that I can't BREATHE and SWALLOW or DRINK Water and gave me presecriptions, something that relaxes and a steroid that is opening my diaphram/esophagus (or whatever, your'e a nurse so I know you know what I mean):ohmy:!

VIOLA...I am not suffocationg in agony!

I was already starving, but now I want to DREAM big for when I'm feeling better

I'm interested in all your experiences with SPICY FOODguys!:)

One of the problems with spicy food is that you can no longer eat and drink at the same time. So previously if you ate something too hot you probably had a drink of something to ease the burning sensation. You can no longer do that. So it probably all depends on your tolerance to spicy foods.

I have eaten mildly spicy foods a couple of times with no problems but it can be uncomfortable when it is spicier than you thought!

As long as what you're eating is in line with your post op diet, then there shouldn't be a problem! Glad to know you are finally feeling better!

I LOVE my spicy foods. I use tobasco sauce on my red beans! I think you can probably have it as soon as it is possible. When I started mushies I ate hot sauce on my refried Beans. But like the previous poster said, don't forget you aren't supposed to drink!

As to drinking....actually most beverages don't help and can exacerbate a bad reaction to capsicum (the "hot" in peppers). Milk or ice cream can soothe it, though (high fat, high sugar)....so just have a dish of ice cream handy LOL j/k

We were taught, growing up in El Paso, to use salt. It always worked for me.

I eat a lot of spicy Korean and Malaysian food. I agree with the issue about drinking - if you think you'll need to use some Water to help with the burning sensation then make sure the spiciness is mild enough to not need that. But I have a pretty high tolerance to spicy foods so it hasn't been a problem (thank goodness). But I love spicy food and would have been sad if I had to give it up. I am actually planning another trip to Korea and I am SO excited to have authentic spicy Korean food again!! YAY!

Restless is correct. Drinking Water won't east the burning of spicy food. Rice is a good solution, although bandsters have to be careful with rice. When you think about it, no wonder rice is often served with Mexican and Asian food.

I was 2wks post op and I actually got a shrimp and crab enchilada (spelling) and ask the manager to please make it without the tortilla and then to please put it all in the blender and OMG it was so good I had enough food for a whole weeks lunches.. It was really great. I would say anything soft you can eat and remember ask them to blend it and take tiny bites..

Now I am just about 4wks out and still have not had chips, tortillas just a good thing to stay way from...

I thought chips were sliders. Tostado chips go through too easily...so for THAT reason you may want to avoid them, but if you chew them up well, they don't bunch or ball up, they go through.

And honestly I LOVE Mission low carb flour tortillas. I eat them several times a week. I do chew them well...but flour tortillas don't give everyone problems. Corn tortillas, again, don't ball or clump up so I think even if flour tortillas give you problems, corn tortillas (those used in enchiladas and flautas and tacos) would be "safe". Maybe to be indulged in only occasionally, but safe.

I am about 3 months post op and I eat mexican food about once a week. I eat one chicken taco (no shell) and one order refried Beans and some salsa on the side:) It cures my taste buds and fills me up. Plus, it costs $3 total!!! Plus it is good to eat out sometimes!!

I know Water doesn't soothe the burning is such, with Indian food they eat yogurt or cucumber raita or similar to take away the hot sensation. But not being able to drink at all makes a huge difference. A drink even at the end of the meal would get rid of the lingering taste, refresh the palate etc but you can't do it and after spicy food it feels weird!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
