Slow Losers - Unite!

Me too. I chose this surgery to avoid malabsorption, I just feel so desperate right now.

I had a resting metabolic rate test done: it says I burn 1800-1900 calories at rest. Thus the reason for cutting to 1300-1400; 500 cal a day X 7 days = 3500 cal = 1 lb lost per week. Right? NO!

I'm at the gym 3-4 days a week, but I have done this for 10 months now so I really don't think it's the whole replacing fat with muscle thing that is keeping me from losing.

I had my thyroid checked in Jan. Normal. Sure it is.

I tried taking glucophage for 6 months about 2 years ago; it's supposed to regulate blood sugar and other problems from PCOS. No result.

What's the next step?

I think the next step is to find an endocrinologist. I don't know what the answer is, ultimately, I just know that something isn't right

:cry Ok, you guys know I was having a bad day yesterday. It's time for my confession. I ate 10 bite-size candybar pieces last night. I know better than to fall into the "this isn't working so I might as well do as I want" trap but I did it anyway. :think Well, today is a new day, I'm going to try to do better, at least I didn't gain any weight. :nervous

Okay Kryssa, you had 10 bite sized candies. That's equal to what? 1 entire candy bar? But the good news is that you stopped at 10. You didn't eat the entire bag.

I eat candy. I never beat myself up for eating stuff that isn't on the list. I still eat ice cream, chips, and stuff. I can even eat pizza. But when I have pizza I will eat 1/2 an individule pizza, not 1/2 a large pizza and the last time I had ice cream, I bought a pint of Ben and Jerry's Marsha Marsha Marshmellow. I had 6 servings out of that pint. SIX.

One of the points of the band is to teach us moderation. Not denial. The band is an alternative lifestyle.

We've ALL been there.

Thanks for sharing. It's good to know that we're not alone in this struggle. Frustration gets the better of all of us somtimes

Kryssa,

I sure hope you are feeling much better. I know you are on a mission right now with your fills, so I was wondering when your next one is. I see you are at 2.2, but are several fills in. My second fill took me to 2.8, so I am curious how far your next will go (and you know I have the same problem as you right now). I also agree with everyone else one looking for more medical answers. I know you said your thyroid was fine, but it could be something else. Years ago I was reluctant to go because I thought the thyroid bit was hokey. What a bozo I was! Turns out my thyroid is frightenly low. My pulse is barely with in normal range (58-60 bpm), skin disgustingly scaly all over my body, I'm ALWAYS cold and my gall bladder even has decreased functioning! I should have gotten to the doctor sooner. GO GO GO and demand answers! Let us know how you do.

Hey Y'all,

Karen from Texas here. I was banded 3/7/05 and have lost 45lbs this whole year! (Woe is me) I have more than 50lbs more to lose. I thought I was the slowest loser around. I'm in if I qualify. Talk to y'all later.

My next fill is tomorrow afternoon. Doc says he will give me another .2ccs then. I hope that will do it. The weirdest thing happened to me yesterday: we went out for lunch and I couldn't finish my salad and a piece of chicken. That's NEVER happened before. As a matter of fact, it took me the rest of the day to eat my whole dinner (it was pretty large). I had LOTS of slime, but that is becoming an every meal thing for me. Could this possibly be restriction? What a novel idea! Now I'm a little worried about my appt. tomorrow. I'm pretty sure my tightening has to do with monthly issues, but it COULD be that my last fill kicked in. What to do? I guess I'll see how eating goes today...

I would recommend postponing your appointment. If you are sliming at almost every meal, you most definately have restriction...

I am calling the doc now. Thanks to all who have expressed concern (not just on this thread). I guess I thought sliming was normal since I've read about it so much. Guess not.

Kryssa,

I know we go through similar things, but I have to say that sliming is VERY rare for me. Once I started taking tiny bites that stopped for me. Not saying you don't, in fact you might. It just worries me, that's all. I am glad you are postponing. I wish I had some advice, though. Let us know when you figure out your next step. I would love to know how things go. Keep your chin up, k?

ok, I was banded on August 2nd, 2005, and I lost 18lbs very quickly, the docs were all inpressed. I was so excited. Well, that didnt last long. I have lost a total of 25lbs since august. They keep telling me they havnt found the right fill yet. I am also getting discouraged. I joined the gym 3weeks ago. So far the I have been going 3 times a week and the scale just will not go past 200lbs. I am very disapointed. I hope that by the time summer gets here I am atleast 10lbs lighter. I think alot that I should have had the gastric bypass done. Id be thin by now. Well good luck to all of you.

I'm thinking that if you have only lost 25 pounds, and you are doing all that you say, then it's time to talk to someone other than your surgery.

You might have something metabolicly going on.

your surgeon's only tool is surgery, so all problems should be fixed the same way. You know, if the only tool you know is a hammer, all problems are nails.

:update:

The doctor decided not to fill or unfill me for now. He said I'm not overly restricted; I just haven't learned to work WITH my band. I admit, that's not what I wanted to hear. :lalala: Well! Don't I feel like an idiot! I went back and looked up all the bandster rules and decided to follow them zealously. What did I have to lose? It was hurting EVERY time I ate at this point. So yesterday at lunch I took tiny bites and chewed them forever. I felt ridiculous but what I didn't feel was pain. :D Could I really have been that stupid? At dinner I had a roll and the pain was instant. :D But instead of just attributing it to eating at all, I now know it was just the bread. I THOUGHT I had been following the rules. :D I didn't realize my idea of a small bite and my band's might not be the same. I don't know if I never learned to really really change my way of eating because it was my 4th fill before I felt anything, but I am going to do better from here on out. Thanks again to everyone who was concerned about me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
