The Ham Police.....

Recommended Posts

Okay, I keep reading posts where new bandsters ask if anyone cheated in the pre-op diet. I had totally forgotten about this, but it is so funny! I was 1 week in on the sugar free liquid pre-op diet & totally miserable. My husband went & bought a pound of ham for his lunch. I broke down & ate some of it! No bread, just ham. This went on for 2 days. My husband came in one afternoon & decided to make himself a sandwich. A puzzled look came over his face when he pulled the ham out of the fridge. He turns to me and says, "Have you been eating ham?" Caught & totally pissed off, I replied, "What are you? The ham police?!" I don't think I'll ever live this down!! LOL! It's funny now! But I was pissed at the time!

Anyone else get caught?

lol! That's pretty funny. See, sometimes it pays to live alone! No one to BUST me out!! I *did* about two weeks post surgery chew a piece of beef Jerky, didn't swallow any. The beefy flavor was HEAVEN to me. I sucked all the flavor out then spit the remains. That was my only cheat.

Ham Police! Very funny.

I'm very happy that the docs in Mexico don't put you on any type of special pre-op diet. I don't know if I would have made it! NO sugar and all liquid? ??? I'll bet you were miserable. Your husband is lucky he still has all his limbs ( I would've ripped one or two of them off if I had been there!)

I was bad the night before surgery. Rootbeer pop used to be my absolute favorite. Not the diet crap either, the yummy sugary stuff.

We were in Meijer with my sister, who had graciously allowed us to stay with her that night since it was close to the hospital where I had my surgery done.

I saw an A&W rootbeer in the checkout, which was my absolute favorite of all rootbeers! So I broke down and bought a 20oz bottle. And I enjoyed every single last little pee picking drop of it too!!!

I fessed up to my surgeon as she was wheeling me into surgery the next morning (because she asked if I had been able to stick to the pre-op Atkins style diet I was on that week before) and she said, "Was it the diet or the real stuff?" I sheepishly replied, "The real good sugary stuff." She just chuckled and said, "Ok. But you won't be doing that anymore now, right?" And of course I said, "Right!"

I'm lucky she was so understanding and didn't beat me over the head with my then uninstalled band. *grin*

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
