where exactly am I getting stuck?

Recommended Posts

Ok. I know I should know this- I have studied the books I have but I can't seem to grasp this. I don't have my next appt. until Monday the 10th of August but I am definitely going to ask for further explaination as they will have the little model there of the stomach and band so that will help but in the meantime...........sometimes I get stuck- I am still learning what I can and can not tolerate but when I get stuck exactly where is the food stuck? Is it not able to get through the band part that inflates when I get a fill (is this the stoma) or is it stuck up near the esophogus. When it happens it happens after very little amount of food and if I am getting stuck in this part after only a few bites then do I not have sufficient restriction because shouldn't it be sitting in the pouch longer. If it were in the esophogus then wouldn't this occur if I were eating too much and it was backing itself back up into my throat? (again, my stuck episodes appear to be more related to eating too fast and not chewing enough). Just trying to figure out some basics that I can't seem to grasp for the life of me!!!!!

Nobody's ever managed to explain this one well. I agree, the way the band is said to work, HOW can you get stuck immediately? And how can you get stuck from a bite of food that comes after several bites, so there's already food in your pouch and THAT bite cant possibly be going through the stoma already.

I know food DOES stay in my pouch becuase I go to bed and if I've eaten anything after dinner, it causes me discomfort from sitting high up in my stomach so that when I lie down i feel overfull.

Someone once said on here its like an airlock. There's air in your stomach, naturally and when you swallow, sometimes the food blocks air in there that cant go down or up, so you get that pressure feeling, the golf ball. True stuck that's going to result in a pb to me doesnt feel like the golf ball, it hurts much more specifically at the stoma.

I always thought, in a vague sort of way, that it kind of "depends" on the food, how full, how well chewed. in other words, I think it can be because it is sitting at the stoma and irritating the sides of the stomach...or you're too full and it irritates the esophagus. I don't KNOW this though...I just think it. I am going to ask my doc, too, Aug 30. He's a sharp guy and always good about answering my questions...it will be nice to compare answers

I came on here tonight to see if I could find a post of this situation. At almost every meal that I eat I start feeling some sensations in the esaphagus after the first or second bite, and it does not really seem to matter what the food is that I am eating.

I have PB'd three times since I have had my third fill and I have learned quickly the difference of the stuck feeling and the feeling in my esaphagus but I was really wondering what that feeling is and what the actuall "full feeling" feels like. Also, is it normal that the feeling in the esaphagus goes away after a while during the meal for you guys? I think I stop eating my meals not because I am full but because I can not stand the feeling in my esaphagus any more. There has been times that the feeling goes away and then I can eat a lot at the meal and never come close to PB'ing or feeling really full.

I am still learning how this is supposed to work and it seems like I get a different feeling all the time and some times feel very confused. With that being said I have lost a lot of weight and now eat about 2 - 3 cups of food at a meal and usually do not feel too hungry between meals so it is working, even though I do not think I know what my full feeling is yet.

Now this an explanation that not only makes sense, but souds like it actually feels... to me. :w00t:

but i would sure be interested in what your doc explains to you.:sneaky:

I had the same question. My stuck feeling made me feel like I could not breath it scared the crap out of me.

I was having diner at a Japanese steak house I ate a couple of bites of rice and it all went down hill from there I thought I was going to pass out in the ladies room. I am really not sure what PB ing is but, it was coming back up but not like when oh let's say when you have morning sickness. The whole experience was weird for me I thought if I drank something that would help push it down.NOPE it made it worse back into the ladies room.

My first fill is Thursday I can't wait to ask him what went wrong.

I went for a fill today so I asked about this.It wasn't my surgeon but one of his team. The response left me even more confused.

I was told that although the band slows down the passage of food into the lower stomach that it actually moves through quite quickly. It isn't really sitting in there for long.Which would mean that when you get the stuck feeling that the food probably is trying to get through the stoma.

The problem with this is that this seems to be different to what we have been told about how the band works.I said this and was told that yes there is the mechanical part but there also seems to be something else that the band does to make us satisfied that they(or this particular fill person) don't yet fully understand. That somehow the position of the band is making us feel full even if the food is not sitting there.

Still looking forward to reading the explanations that you have got from your Dr's. Please don't forget to keep us updated.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
