I am 2 weeks out and so tired sleeping on my back, it is sometimes sore in the morning. I usually sleep back, side, back, other side, etc. (toss and turn)

Last night, I went to bed on my back and woke myself up this morning when I turned onto my side. I woke up feeling like my innards were on fire, like all that 'stuff' in there was being pushed to the side. Did I damage something?

Do you sleep on your side? Is it OK to sleep on your side?

Is it too soon to sleep on my side???

Hi,

I am actually only 8 days out (banded on 7/27) and I have been side sleeping for two days now. I have never been able to sleep on my back and I hated it and ended up in a recliner the first few days. I also love to sleep on my stomach and was not sure if I would ever get back to that. What I found that actually helped though is to put a pillow under your stomach when sleeping on your side to sort of raise your stomach a bit and give it support if that makes sense. Kind of like those body pillows you can get. I do get nauseas if I sleep on my left side if I drank anything right before bed. Good Luck I hope you can find a comfortable position and get some sleep.

I couldn't, not that early; I could only sleep propped up for at least two weeks. I was not able to sleep in bed so soon because it was too painful to lift myself back up.

It is unlikely that you damaged anything, not by simply lying down. All of the healing, tender tissue and muscle was simply shifted one way for a while then you moved and it shifted back causing pain. You are going to have that for a while.

It is okay to sleep however you want as soon as you want, how you sleep is more about comfort.

I'm a side sleeper - can't sleep on my back. I slept on my side immediately after surgery. I did find putting a thin pillow across my stomach helped, especially cushioning the portal incision. I rolled with it from side to side at night, pressing against it really helped me turn over.

When I was in the hospital I asked the nurse if sleeping on my side would hurt anything and she said no.

I have been sleeping on my right side after the 1st night. I am now 6 days out. I sleep thru the night with no problem. I can't lay on my left side, I think that is where the port is.

Good luck

I was able to sleep on my side about a week after surgery, but only my right side, never my left (to this day). I also agree with the person who said to try to prop a pillow up under your stomach, it really helps.

I slept in bed the first night and thought I was going to die, but was so conked out by pain meds it really didn't matter....lol The second night I slept on the couch and continued to do that for about 4 nights. It was so much easier because you can't move awhole lot. After the 5 nights I was able to sleep back in bed on my stomach. I was just easy when I first layed down so it wouldn't hurt. I could NOT sleep on my left side for about 2 weeks, so I would just use a king size pillow and put it slightly under me behind my back, helped alot with the side sleeping.< /p>

I can not sleep on my left side! I can't even lay that way for very long. I miss sleeping on my stomach! I had to sleep on my back for a couple weeks. It was really hard for me. I now sleep on my right side with a pillow around my port site (this is a life saver for those who just had surgery). I used my little pillow all the time to get up and down. Really helped with pain. I also sleep with a pillow between my knees I don't know why but it helps me sleep like a rock. Hang in there it gets better:smile2:.

I was banded 6 days ago and have been sleeping on my side. My doctor placed my port in the center of my stomach below my sternum. After reading many of the same posts, I am so glad he did so. I have no port pain and can sleep whatever position I want (side or back).

Good Luck and hope the pain subsides!

I am a side sleeper. I found that hugging a pillow to my side kept the pressure off my tummy. After a few nights, I didn't need it anymore.

I slept on my left side (the one with the port) the first night and on my stomach (my norm) from night #2 on.

I felt like the longer I delayed it, the more stiff I'd be, and more likely to form adhesions. I was a little stiff the first day or two, but I wanted a good night's sleep.

Plus actually the pressure is good to stop bleeding.

I was similiar to Rutiglius and used a pillow on my side squezzed really tight and it was fine but everytime I would change sides I would have to take pillow with me. I still have to use it every now and then especially if I have been doing a lot of exercise. Anyone else have that problem

I have always slept on my side in the fetal position. I toss and turn alot and go from side to side. I have never had a problem with it from the first night. Hopefully, you can find a comfortable spot.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
