anyone have PCOS-polycystic ovarian syndrome?

Recommended Posts

I have PCOS, was told children were probably not an option. Got the band, lost 75lbs in one year, got off of BC and became pregnant 1 week later. I trully believe it was because of the band. I am not 6 months pp, breastfeeding so I cannot take my Metformin. I've started gaining weight and all of my PCOS problems are coming back. Not sure what I will do, but I am so thankful to the band, gave me my beautiful daughter

congratulations!! I have lost 70 pounds and I am still not regular. I wonder why mine has yet to regulate itself. I've heard exactly what you are saying many times before therefore I believe it to be true. Mine just hasn't gotten the picture yet. AF must know I want to lose 60 more pounds before I get pregnant.

Good luck with everything and again congratulations.

I have had PCOS my whole life...next month I will turn the big 40. I have a 3 year old son after many fertility treatments and we tried almost immediately for another child after he was born without success. My husband and I decided that it was only going to be the 3 of us and we were ok with that and I decided to have the lapband surgery in February of this year. In 4 months I lost 50 lbs...then the shock of our lives...I AM PREGNANT...8 weeks to be exact. No pills, no shots, no IUI's, just weight loss. Even though we are still a little numb, we couldn't be happier. So to those out there who think that there is no hope...keep praying...keep your head up and keep a positive attitude. And even if you can't get pregnant, at least you will have a healthier body and will feel so much better about yourselves and will have a better self esteem. Good luck to all of you trying to conceive...I HAVE BEEN THERE AND I KNOW YOUR PAIN.:grouphug:

Thank you so much for sharing your story!! I was just banded on 7-13 and have had fertility issues all along, we were blessed to get pregnant three times with clomid but really feel in our hearts that we are not done yet. We have been trying for over two years again with fertility to have another baby with no luck. So I decided to focus on getting myself healthy, if God says our family is done we are okay with it, but really feel there is more in store for us. :)

I was diagnosed with PCOS 4 years ago, right before I got married. My husband wasn't ready for kids at the time, so I didn't really let the diagnosis affect me, and to be honest, I didn't really believe that I had it or that I would have problems ttc. I really started to get the baby bug about a year ago, but was very concerned about my weight and how it would affect me and a baby during a pregnancy, so I decided to get the Lap Band to help me lose the weight and hopefully fix those problems. I had the surgery 9 months ago and have lost 63lbs in that time. We started ttc almost 4 months ago and still haven't had any results. I am really hoping that as I continue to lose weight, my PCOS symptoms will go away and that we will be able to have children naturally. We have already decided not to take any drugs of any kind and that we will adopt if we have to. But now that it's been a few months, I'm really starting to freak out that my PCOS is affecting my fertility and that I wont be able to conceive naturally! I give so much credit to all of you that have been trying for a lot longer then me and are still hanging in there. It has been hard for me not to get so emotional every month when nothing happens! I just keep praying for patients and strength!

When my husband and I got married 10 years ago, I didn't want kids. I have personal reasons behind it. I didn't want to be the parent my parents were. After about 4 years, I realized I wanted kids. My step-daughter was 5 when we got married, and she's 15 now. I realized I wasn't going to be the same as my parents.

So about 6 years ago my husband and I started trying to have a baby. Nothing ever happened. Then all of a sudden, I started to gain weight at a rapid rate and decided I needed to find out what was going on. I went to the base OB/GYN we had at the time (my husband is in the air force). She diagnosed me with PCOS and sent me off base to another OB/GYN. That lady confirmed the PCOS with insulin resistance. She pretty much told me I was infertile and kids weren't going to happen. She also had me taking 3000mg of Metformin a day and had my stomach so upset I couldn't leave the house. In the span of about a year, I went from 120 to 160, then in another year to 220 in weight. When I asked her if she could give me anything to counter the side effects of the Metformin she told me if I couldn't take it, she couldn't do anything for me and hung up on me. I quit the Metformin that day.

I started to see a PCM off base, thanks to a shortage of doctors on the base, and he helped me so much. It turned out he was an expert in PCOS and told me after trying the Metformin and the supervised and diabetic diets, I was stuck. They way the PCOS works, I was only really going to keep the weight where it was or gain more. Losing it was almost impossible. So we discussed the lap band. He sent a referral in immediately and I was banded on June 10th 2009.

I just found 2 weeks ago I am pregnant. As of today, I am 14 weeks and 2 days pregnant. After 6+ years of trying and losing 95 pounds, I am pregnant with a child I never dreamed I would have, and I couldn't be more happy.

It goes to show, we CAN overcome our infertility issues with PCOS by losing the weight alone.

I could NOT have lost the weight without the lap band. I couldn't be pregnant right now without the lap band. I also did NOT use any type of fertility treatments, like drugs (clomid, etc) or IVF.

Ladies, have faith, because it does happen, and it happens when you least expect it. God is amazing.

Added that I didn't use any infertility treatments.

Anyone who knows me knows I hate military doctors. My DH and I tried for two years to get pg. We were stationed overseas and were only authorized to use the base medical facilities. I went to four different doctors. One told me I was making it up (when I said my periods were 90-100 days apart). Second told me I was just too fat to have kids. A third told me to "put down the bon bons and get into the gym" (despite the fact I was following weight watchers to a T and working out 6 days a week). The fourth said "You probably DO have a fertility problem, but we have so many women who are already pregnant here we're not going to help you get pregnant".

We were then stationed back in the US and I went to the Dr rigth away, and she diagnosed me with PCOS. I was sent to a specialist 6 weeks later. She made the incredible discover that I was already almost 6 weeks pregnant with my now 2.5yr old.

I got the band because not only do I want to be able to have babies easier, but because I want to be around to see them grow up. At 27 and 319lbs, I couldn't see myself being around to watch my daughter get married.

Now, 4 months post op, I'm down 67lbs. I want to ttc, but my DH insists on waiting the recommended 18 months.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
