Recommended Posts

And we are off...We hope more of you can join us in our challenge. July was an awesome start. Lets keep moving and getting those miles logged. I am so excited that we motivated each other on this journey of good health. I'm looking forward to what we can accomplish in August.

For any NEWCOMERS, check out the July 2009 Mile Challenge to see how our posters got their miles in for the month. Set any goal that you feel will be attainable. Do not give up. Just keep moving.

I was thinking it would be interesting to total up all the miles the participants of the July challenge achieved That would look very encouraging. I'm not sure everyone has updated their totals yet though. Just a thought.

Jenai that is a great idea. How do you want to format it?

Welcome to the challenge Last. Most of us were not really active before the challenge. We either had equipment at home or memberships that we we not fully using. Now most of us hate it when we miss a day of exercising. It is not a competitive challenge where we are trying to out do one another. We just encourage each other to keep going and not give up. Thats why it was better that we set our own goals. It really worked.

Does anyone else have the Nike+ ipod that they use? I started using this in feburary and it's great. you can create running clubs and it tracks all you progress for you in miles, time and even calories! My nike plus id is WBIV and it's attached to email brownw01@hotmail.com . so if anyone else has it, let me know and we can start a lapband running club to track all of our progress!

I was thinking just a bar graph of sorts. I did a preliminary one, but was unable to tell what everyone's ending mileage was for July. I would like to propose that everyone does a final post on each month challenge with their total for the month. Some of us did this and put the number in the post, some of us just have the number on our ticker. Unfortunately that number is erased when the ticker is updated for the next months challenge. This is what I have so far. Maybe the participants can fill in via posts what their numbers were. I also thought it would be interesting to see the different methods we all use to reach our mileage.

Participant...................... Method.......................... Miles Total

Willowcat.................................................................180

Jenai................................. Elliptical......................... 85

Openag....................................................................... 61

2911 Plans................................................................. 55

MrsNeener................................................................. 50.5

.....................................................................................431.5

Feel free to suggest any changes, improvements. I have it saved on an excel sheet that I could email to you.

Okay, you are all High Achievers!!!!! Your July Challenge just hooked me! I'd like to join for August.

Just came back from two weeks vacation in the Ozark Mountains.....Those hills looked so intimidating!!! Every morning between 6:oo and 7:00 I'd quietly sneak out to walk before family got going. My goal was to walk a little farther than the day before....It really did motivate me! Day 1 - All up hill on the going trip which was great. Got about 1 1/2 miles. Day 2 - 2 miles........Last day I was over 4 1/2 miles!!! I was on top of those Ozark Mountains.....What a feeling!

So this sounds like a challenge I'd like to travel with you!

I'll set my goal at 50 miles ... I start back to school also ...my evenings always get booked up...so I'm going to try the early morning before school and shower to get in my miles. Beside beginning of school and getting to know all my little kiddos takes a lot out of me...so in order to meet my goal .. I think early morning is going to be my answer.

Thanks again for the motivation, accountability, and if needed a KICK out of bed! Please keep me going.

P.S. 8 months ago and 96 lbs heavier I could not make it from the school parking lot to the office without people being concerned that I was going to have a heart attack me included. What a ride it has been for me...I'm not quite half way to my goal everyday brings me a little closer to it!

Keep it up!

Deb

Jenai thats great. Thank you for doing that for us. I am not computer saavy at all. I logged my miles by using my stationary bike. It is getting easier for me to use it daily. I need to reset my goal from 50 to at least 60 miles. I initially thought I would use my treadmill for the challenge, but I got a better workout on the bike. I have an ellipitical machine too, but I can not go more that 1 minute on it and it only tracks steps not miles. Does anyone know if you can convert steps into miles?

Janai, You're a "numbers" person! Looks good! Thanks for doing that! While I'm not a "numbers" person, I appreciate a good chart or graph because I'm so visual. Plus, this makes it feel "official" that I really did work hard to meet my goal, and I did it! Thanks again! PS. I logged my miles on an exercise bike.

Debbie, Welcome! I'm a teacher too. I love my job, but my little guys also take all of my energy. I'm wiped out when I get home. So just like you, I've decided that I have to "pay myself first" and exercise first thing in the morning--otherwise it just won't happen. But I am so much NOT a morning person that this is going to be a major life change for me. I figure that in order to get to school by 8:00 am, if I'm going to get 30 minutes of exercise in and also a shower, then I have to get up at 5:00 am. I'm trying to get my body back on school time. Did you know that it's still dark at 5:00 am--even in the summer?! That tells you how often I'm up at 5:00 am! LOL! I'm sure hoping that carrying around less weight at work helps with my energy level. And I'm also hoping that the daily work-outs will help with my overall stress levels. So, I'll be thinking about you, Debbie, when I'm up and riding my exercise bike--it'll be good to know that I've got company! Glad you're joining us. Willowcat

2911, Since August started on a Saturday, are we checking in on Fridays or Saturdays to declare our miles? Declaring my miles keeps me accountable--even if no one else knows how many miles I "should" have done for the week (I know--and putting it in print makes it offcial to me).

Hi Willowcat. Lets do a Saturday check in for this challenge. I agree that we should log our miles weekly. That is what kept me accountable too.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
