3-day pre-op diet vs 2 week

Recommended Posts

My doctor only requires a 3 day pre-op diet of 2 Protein Shakes and one small 300 cal. meal a day. It seems everyone else on a 2 or 1 week pre-op diet. My surgery date is Aug. 17. I am thinking I should go ahead and start my diet now. Or at least cut way back in what i am eating. I see him for a pre-surgery consultation on Aug 6, so I guess i will ask him then? What is everyone else's pre-op diet like?

Doctors vary on the type and length of preop diets. I wasn't required to have any preop diet at all. Just nothing after 7pm the night before surgery. If you are really concerned ask about it at your preop visit.

You will be doing yourself a huge favor if you concentrate on the things that are hardest for some bandsters to adjust to: taking small bites, chewing well and NOT drinking with meals.

Good luck!

heyhey!

I start my pre-op diet tomorrow am, banding scheduled for August 11th. : )

My diet consists of

-2 cups or less daily of juice: apple, orange, grapefruit, Powerade or gatorade

- 2 cups or less of yogurt or cottage cheese or skin milk

- as much popsicles, fudgesicles, and Jello (all sugar free)

- 3 (12oz) Protein shakes a day

- as much broth as i'd like

- as much Water, crystal light, and diet soda.

hope that helps : )

goodluck!

I on the other hand had a 3-week preop diet! But that's uncommon. Your surgeon will look at your blood work etc and make the call if you need a longer one; generally I'd say trust him/her!

I think I will try your diet for a week before surgery and practice eating slower and small bites I already do not drink with meals

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
