Kidney Stones

Recommended Posts

So I woke up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and noticed my lower back hurt a little. I have a history of having back spasms there so atf first I thought nothing of it. Then I lay back down and tried to get into my usual comfortable positions when by back hurts but it kept getting worse and worse. I also noticed that even though it was the same spot as my back spasms, it didn't feel the same at all...I could stand up straight move around, etc, etc.

But the pain was excrutiating, so much so I started getting nauseous. I was hoping at this point it was just gas pain. I went to the bathroom a couple fo times, tried curling up i the fetal position which usually helps with that kind of pain-- nothing. Then I went for a walk around the block because moving is good for gas pain. While walking it was a tad bit better but my nausea kept getting worse. Finally I gave in, about 2 hours after it started and realized that it probably wasn't gas pain and given the loction I was highly suspicious of a kidney stone.

Turns out I was right. That was their first suspision when I went into the hospital. They hooked me up to fluids, got some blood and urine, and sent me for a CT. They had me drink some contrast which taksed like Crystal Light so that in addition to check for a stone, they could evaluate my stomach and make sure there was no leak or anything else band related that could be the cause.

Well, no surprise here, the CT showed a honking (5mm) kidney stone. They said under 7mm you can usually pass it on your own, but 5 mm is still very large. And man was it painful. Altough thank the lord (and the Dr.) for the morphine and Toradol because it took my pain from a 9-10 on the pain scale down to almost non-existant. I really hope it doesn't wear off too soon.

Anyhow, the whole point of this very long story is that I was wondering if anyone else has had issues with kidney stones post-op. I haven't heard of it, but I was curious if they could be related due to change in diet or something. I called my Surgeon's office but their out to lunch right now but I'll try 'em again later. Anyone else have any problems with this?

PS- I went to an acupunturist who is going to try to help me with weight management. I had my second appointment last Tues and he said that the tongue and the pulse are the main methods of eastern diagnosis. Well, apparently the kidney portion of my pulse (I didn't know pulses had portions but apparently they do) was weak. How strange is that? He totally knew something was up with my kidney just from checking my pulse and now, here I am 3 days later with a kidney stone. If that doesn't make me a believer in this stuff, nothing will.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
