How long did you wait....

Recommended Posts

I have my last visit with the surgeon before we set a date for my surgery on August 11. I'd love to have it done on the first available date that he has BUT I start a new job Monday, three weeks training and then I start school. So...Do I do it August 21st and just have the weekend to recover OR do I wait until my Xmas break from school so I have a full 2 weeks off to recover? How long was your recovery? Do you think that after 2 days you could sit in lecture all day? How long did you wait to return to work?

Thanks guys!

Discuss with your surgeon. Without knowing you (and how you heal, do you have comorbidities, how old you are, who your surgeon is, yada yada etc LOL) it's impossible to say for sure but odds....

playing the odds do not do it with just 2 days to recover. You'll screw up your new job.

Better to wait until Christmas break.

Your surgeon can guide you best in this (he knows his patients) but even we bandsters who had worry free easy great recoveries need more than 2 days recovery.

Plus you'll be on a liquid diet for a while...you'd be stressing your body too much I think, between healing and the new job. Making too many demands with no nutrition.

Don't push yourself- wait until Christmas break(even though it's hard). I was shocked by how long it took me to REALLY recover. I could function two days later, but couldn't have worked.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
